What are the responsibilities and job description for the Zoo Camp Instructor position at Red River Zoo?
The Red River Zoo is looking for a fun, creative, and responsible Zoo Camp Instructor to help lead the Summer 2022 Day Camps! As part of the Education Department, your job will be to create a fun, educational, and safe experience for the program’s participants. This unique, position is a great way to acquire skills in developing educational programming, informal education, and classroom management.
As one of our Zoo Camp Instructors, you will work as a team to plan out and supervise each day of dynamic activities for the camp participants. Typical activities for Summer 2022 Day Camps include (but are not limited to): games, crafts, educational activities, animal encounters, keeper chats, and carousel rides. The children in the programs are ages 4 to 6, 1st-2rd grade, and 3rd-4th grade. This position runs from the end of May through mid-August.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise, lead and teach camp participants on topics including animals, conservation, ecology, animal behavior, and more
- Collaborate with Education Department staff and Red River Zoo staff to run a smooth and timely day camp.
- Deliver educational content and further the mission of the Zoo in a fun and exciting way
- Present and handle program animals (including mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates) to camps participants
- Instruct various camp activities on time including games, activities, keeper chats, and animal encounters as well as pick up and drop off.
- Communicate effectively with camp participants, youth assistants, parents, and other zoo staff
- Assist with programming and crowd control at Special Events
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to teach children participants concepts relating to the zoo, wildlife, and conservation.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing environments
- Ability to teach age-appropriate science concepts to children of developmental levels
- Demonstrate time management and group management skills
- Reliable and punctual attendance habits
- Outgoing and passionate about nature and wildlife
- Be able to be outside to on your feet for long periods
- Ability to responsibly keep track of a large group of children
Minimum Requirements
- Prior experience teaching children in a formal or informal education setting preferred
- Have completed at least one year of college.
- CPR/First Aid Certified preferred
- Basic computer skills: Microsoft Office
