ReDiscover is a nonprofit community mental health agency that offers a full spectrum of programs and services for people whose lives have been affected by serious mental illness and/or substance use. ReDiscover helps men, women, and children who have limited income, no insurance, or who are under-insured.
We started out in Lee's Summit, MO as a group of volunteers in the basement of a local church. We incorporated in 1969. Over the years, the community has known our agency and our unique programs by several different names, including Research Mental Health, North Star, and Common Ground. In 2003, we permanently changed our agency name to ReDiscover.
POSITION OVERVIEW
ReDiscover's Coed Residential Treatment Program has an opening for a Counselor Technician to work Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. All duties will take place at our Coed Residential Treatment facility.
Under the general direction of the Team Leader, the Counselor Technician performs the job after receiving general instructions. Clients served are adults and their families in ReDiscover comprehensive substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation programs.
The Counselor Technician is responsible for providing or facilitating structured activities with the client in accordance with their recovery goals. Such activities include providing onsite support services for clients and program as directed, providing transportation to and from treatment and outside activities, assisting the treatment team in ensuring a safe and therapeutic treatment environment for clients and staff, and communicating client activities, needs and concerns appropriately to other members of the treatment team.
Clinical services shall be provided in accordance with the policies and procedures of ReDiscover and the contractual requirements of the State of Missouri, Department of Mental Health, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Conducts quality educational groups while demonstrating good group management skills that enhance the learning environment.
- Demonstrates knowledge of crisis procedures and manages situations as appropriate to their scope of duties
- Demonstrates knowledge of program rules and consistently enforces rules in a professional manner
- Report all problems, incidents, and inappropriate client behaviors to appropriate staff for follow up
- Addresses client behaviors in a clinically appropriate manner or seeks supervision to address the situation that leads to a healthy solution
- Conducts thorough intake property searches and random client/room searches within guidelines along with conducting room walk-through in a professional manner
- Ensures that van is filled with gas, kept clean, driven within the laws, and maintains the van log
- Notifies appropriate staff of low inventory ( OTC medications, linens, office/cleaning supplies, food, etc.)
- Notifies appropriate staff of all maintenance issues with residential housing and vans in a timely manner and problem solves workaround solutions that are appropriate
- Monitors all clients whereabouts at all times and ensures that all client are accounted for at all times
- Conducts drug testing according to proper protocol and reports results accurately and timely to appropriate staff
- Follows outlined procedures for self-administration of medication and reports variances to appropriate staff. Notifies staff of incorrect counts, missing medications, medication errors, and low prescriptions.
- Completes all paperwork and documentation accurately, timely, and thoroughly (incident reports, communication log, group logs, med sheets)
- Completes filing functions in a timely manner
- Maintains appropriate boundaries with clients and interacts with clients within the scope of their job duties
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or GED required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Additional experience and course work in the mental health/substance abuse/criminal justice-related field is preferred.
- Experience in a mental health or substance abuse setting and/or with clients who have co-occurring mental health disorders is preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
- A valid Class E automobile operator’s license is required.
- Counselor Technician must become certified in CPR and First Aid within 3 months of employment.
SKILLS:
- The Counselor Technician must demonstrate skills in developing positive and productive client relationships and provide appropriate ancillary client care under the direction of the program manager or other mental health professionals.
- The ability to work with all persons with multiple challenges (mental illness, substance abuse, physical challenges, developmental disabilities, etc.).
- Requires Basic computer skills in typing/keyboarding, Microsoft Word and Excel programs as well as Gmail.
