Two-Year Visiting Faculty Position in Statistics

The Reed College Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a two-year visiting faculty position in statistics to begin in August 2024. Candidates with degrees in fields outside of statistics are welcome to apply, but they should have sufficient training in statistics and have data analysis experience in order to be considered. Proficiency with the statistical software package R is required. We welcome applications from individuals who may have had nontraditional career paths or who have achieved excellence in statistical careers outside of academia. An Equal Opportunity Employer, Reed values diversity and encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups.

The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of five semester courses per year (two to three distinct course preparations, including introductory statistics), participate in pedagogical and curricular discussions related to our growing statistics and data science program, and supervise senior theses. The senior thesis is a cornerstone of the Reed College academic experience. It is a year-long project, required of every student, that culminates in a written document and an oral defense. Applicants are encouraged to suggest potential thesis projects in their research statement and to describe any experience mentoring students.

Throughout your application materials, please describe the ways in which your past and current teaching, scholarship, mentorship, and/or community service have supported these values. Alternatively, you may include a separate statement regarding your efforts to support these values. In either case, please convey the ways in which your work at Reed will support the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion articulated in the College's diversity and anti-racism statements (http://www.reed.edu/diversity/).

Applications must be submitted through the MathJobs.org website (https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/list/24453) and should include:

  • A cover letter addressing how your teaching and scholarship can be applied to working with undergraduate students. The letter should address your training in statistics and your prior experience with the statistical software program, R.
  • A CV.
  • A teaching statement that addresses the candidate’s goals and practices regarding teaching statistics. Applicants may want to refer to course descriptions found here: https://www.reed.edu/math/courses.html. The potential courses include Math 141, 241, 243, 343, 346, 391, 392, and 394.
  • A research statement.
  • A diversity statement (optional, see previous paragraph) and
  • Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses teaching experience or potential.
