Title: Economic Development Director

Lake Placid-Essex County Quality Destination, Inc., a subsidiary of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, is seeking a full-time Economic Development Director to help implement core components of the Lake Placid and North Elba Destination Management Plan. Key goals of the Management Plan and this position involve diversifying the region’s economy, expanding long term housing opportunities, and ensuring development occurs in a sustainable manner. The selected candidate will work to attract new industries and professional services to the region, expand and diversify the region’s housing, and facilitate conversations between the region’s stakeholders to implement the shared vision of the Management Plan. The geographic focus of this role will be the greater Village of Lake Placid/Town of North Elba community with support provided to other municipalities in Essex County as needed to achieve the goals of the Management Plan.

Lake Placid-Essex County Quality Destination, Inc., a subsidiary of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, is a not-for-profit organization established to promote, educate, and foster quality destinations which will result in economic growth and benefit for the townships of Essex County, New York. The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism is the Destination Marketing and Management Organization for Lake Placid and Essex County, Hamilton County, Saranac Lake, and Tupper Lake in New York.

Reports To: Lake Placid- North Elba Destination Management Committee (DMP Committee) with the Co-Chairs as point people

Job Duties: Typical job duties are expected to include, but not be limited to:

  • Recruiting businesses to relocate to or expand in the community
  • Working with local businesses to identify potential opportunities for expansion, relocation, or creation of new businesses in the area
  • Recruiting and working with developers and including housing as an industry of focus
  • Maintaining relationships with regional stakeholders including local, regional, and state government officials, business leaders, and academic stakeholders
  • Ensuring effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program metrics to quantify successes and challenges
  • Providing routine reports to the Board of Directors as well as to local government leaders
  • Helping entrepreneurs establish businesses by providing information about available resources such as building permits, zoning laws, and tax incentives
  • Facilitating market research to identify opportunities for new businesses in target industries

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, forward-thinking, creative, and capable of establishing and maintaining productive relationships with business leaders, resource providers, and elected officials. Experience with the principles and practices of sustainable economic development is essential. Other qualifications include a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional practice in economic development, public administration, finance, economics, business administration, or an equivalent.

Compensation: Salary starting at $90,000.
