EMS Communicator
A Brief Overview Responsible for receiving, dispatching and coordinating emergency traffic and telephone calls within MEDCOM center (MEDCOM serves as the coordination point in situations requiring EMS resources; conducts flight dispatch and coordinates pre-hospital information for air/ground ambulance services). Operates equipment used for emergency medical services communications.
What you will do
Monitors computer based telephone system and radio console to receive calls requesting emergency dispatch services.
Operates EMS telephone system and radio console to receive and transmit calls in MEDCOM Center and coordinates West Tennessee EMS radio traffic and telephone calls including adequate documentation. • Receives emergency calls/request and determines priorities in accordance with established policies and procedures. • Responds appropriately and provides notifications to calls for emergency services. • Dispatches air ambulance services; conducts flight following and coordinates information for air ambulance services (helicopter) to accurate destination. • Keeps track of the status and location of incoming Ambulances. • Initiates and maintains “patch” communications between the field emergency personnel and base hospital for paramedic orders and reports. • Transfers or conference calls pre-hospital personnel or referring physician/hospital personnel to appropriate receiving personnel. • Notifies or informs hospital emergency room personnel of impending patient admissions. • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide emergency communication services and maintains competency to respond quickly and accurately receive and transmit information of an emergency nature.
Works collaboratively and communicates effectively to coordinate and implement MEDCOM activities with peers and other members of the health care team and pre-hospital personnel to ensure the continuity of patient care.
Prepares and maintains required logs, records, reports, tape libraries and files with required documentation for administrative and compliance purposes. • Maintains list of on call physicians and ancillary staff. • Updates EMS System and HRTS computer programs daily. • Utilizes computer system to retrieve information and generate reports.
Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. • Attends staff meetings, all mandatory in-service and additional continuing education as required. • Participates in emergency and disaster drills as required. • Responds to problems/opportunities to improve care. • Supports and participates in the organization’s Performance Improvement initiatives to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality EMS communication services.
Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment per regulatory requirements. • Monitors equipment and takes corrective action to ensure the integrity of the equipment and avoid downtime. • Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor. • Ensures that required documentation on testing and safety inspections of equipment is available for review and prepared in a timely, clean and concise manner.
Performs activities in compliance with all federal and state communications mandates, operating procedures, data entry and retrieval requirements.
Operates overhead and personal paging system.
Provides coverage for relief and absences as required. Demonstrates flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage of the MEDCOM emergency dispatch system.
Qualifications
High School Diploma Required and
Successful completion of an Emergency Medical Technician course Required and
Must successfully complete FAA Flight Followers Training within 90 days of hire Required
State certified as Emergency Medical Technician Upon Hire Required and
If certified by another state, must obtain TN certification within 1 Year Required
Minimum 2 years experience of extensive EMS field experience or EMS/Police/Fire communications experience Required
