JOB TITLE: Activities Assistant
SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Activities Coordinator, the Activities Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting in the development, organization, coordination and implementation of comprehensive services and programs that meet the needs and interests of each resident. He/she shall assist the Activities Coordinator in areas of resident and staff relations and will be responsible for implementing and supervising programs and activities for residents in the Assisted Living Facility, Skilled Nursing Facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This summarizes the major essential duties and responsibilities regularly performed and normally assigned to this position. May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
- Responsible for assisting in planning and implementing designated programs and activities for the Assisted Living Facility and Skilled Nursing Facility.
- Responsible to facilitate, through the Activity Coordinator, the need for speakers, entertainers, community outreach groups, and assists Activities Coordinator in communicating to other departments regarding set-up and clean-up of resident activities.
- Assists Activities Coordinator with the planning and production of the monthly calendar, newsletter and weekly updates, publicizing programs for residents and staff.
- Assists with recruitment, orientation and coordination of volunteers.
- Establishing and maintaining acceptable record keeping practices and attending scheduled in-services and training, as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in, written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access, etc.). Familiar with telephone equipment, copy machines, and other various office equipment.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must possess patience and understanding of the elderly; sense of imagination and creativity. Must have a sincere interest in working with the elderly population and be able to independently carry out resident programming, as indicated. Ability to plan and assume a leadership role at recreational programs. Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be able to handle residents based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning. Ability to convey information on a person-to-person basis clearly and distinctly so that it is easily understood. Ability to organize and prioritize. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors and the general public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in both indoor and outdoor environments, around and off the grounds of the facility with varying sound, lighting, and temperature conditions. The employee works closely with others as well as alone. The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet (private office) to moderate (ex: business office with computers and office equipment, light traffic) to loud (metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).
OTHER WORK REQUIREMENTS: The position needs to be familiar with the regulations set by the PA Department of Health regarding activities/recreation in a nursing home setting. Experience in recreation and activities preferred, but not necessary. Must be able to use a variety of recreational equipment, audio-visual equipment, sound systems and vehicles. Must be flexible regarding work schedule and willing to work some evenings, weekends and holidays. Must function in a confidential manner. Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
