What are the responsibilities and job description for the Systems Engineer II position at Relativity Space?
Company Overview:
At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.
Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.
Team:
The Systems Engineering team at Relativity is a small, dynamic group situated in the Vehicle Engineering organization specializing in creating the processes and methods required to engineer and certify our rockets. Our primary role is to amplify responsible engineers’ abilities to design the right product. We do this by ensuring teams collaborate, truth is centralized, work is visible, REs know what to design to, and tools and processes are streamlined. We also perform cross-functional analysis as needed, enabling the project to continue moving forward.
What you’ll do:
In this role you will collaborate with team members across the organization while contributing to the development of Relativity’s engineering processes and tools to enable the design, development, certification, and flight of the Terran R launch system.
Example projects and responsibilities include the following:
- Help drive requirement decomposition to the appropriate level
- Ensure verification activities are sufficient and meet the intent of the requirement
- Provide support and information in variety of technical meetings including design reviews, test readiness reviews, change boards, and risk boards
- Build, modify, or eliminate engineering processes to support an efficient, product-focused culture
- Conduct trade studies across vehicle systems to ensure vehicle performance and reliability are achieved
- Provide engineering expertise to solve technical problems at all levels
To be successful in this role, you should be self-motivated, adaptable, and able to contribute significantly to a fast-paced integrated vehicle program. You should also be able to resolve ambiguity and drive projects to completion. Ideally, you have Systems Engineering, Process development, Verification and Validation (V&V), and Requirement Management experience, as well as a proven track record completing projects successfully in a highly collaborative environment.
On a weekly basis, you will be supporting design teams, developing processes tools, and performing analysis. You will also use your strong organizational skills to properly manage the documentation and communication of your actions, recommendations, and decisions.
What you need to know:
- An undergraduate degree in engineering or related field and 2 years relevant experience
- Experience performing cross-functional engineering and integration for complex systems
- Experience solving difficult problems with multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced environment
- Proven track record of contributing to project completion
- Expertise in modern systems engineering practices and tools
- Demonstrable written and oral communication skills
Nice to haves but not required:
- Graduate degree (MS/PhD) in engineering or related field and 1 years of experience
- Hands-on experience in the design, integration, test, and operation of complex systems
- History of taking complex products from concept to production
- Strong desire to learn new subjects to solve difficult and often ambiguous challenges
- Experience using Jira
- Experience using Confluence
- Experience with UML or SysML
Relativity Space offers competitive salary and equity, a generous vacation policy, an annual L&D stipend and more!
