What are the responsibilities and job description for the Care Flight Paramedic position at REMSA?

The purpose of this position is to work as a part of the Care Flight Team to provide high quality medical care and transport of critically ill and injured patients. Coordinate a smooth and efficient system of stocking supplies and equipment on the aircraft/ambulance and equipment rooms and exchange of REMSA user agency equipment.

Qualifications/ Experience Requirements
At time of hire:
* Current California or Nevada Paramedic certification, California certification preferred
* Three (3) years current experience as a Paramedic required.
* National Registered Paramedic certification.
* ACLS certification.
* CPR certification.
* ITLS/TNATC certification.
* PALS/PEPP certification.
* Nevada or California Driver's license.
* Pre-hospital experience preferred.
* Experience in a high performance ALS system beneficial.
* Experience in EMS and public education; field or classroom based desired.
* Experience operating an emergency vehicle a plus
* Clean driving record mandatory.
Upon Hire:
* Submission of Paramedic reciprocity in State of California after hire.
* Air Ambulance Attendant's License after hire.
Additional skills required:
* Must possess excellent written and verbal skills.
* Self starter requiring little oversight.
* Must be adaptable to change and able to function in a team based management structure.
* Knowledge of medical policies, procedures and the REMSA Standard of Care
* Must be able to report to work at Reno base or at various satellite bases as requested.
Within one year of employment
* Successful completion of a REMSA approved Critical Care Paramedic Course (CCEMTP).
* Sierra Sacramento Valley (SSV) for California completed.
* Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).

Position Accountabilities
REMSA was established to oversee Care Flight operations and to coordinate emergency medical service activities through a central emergency medical communications center. REMSA answers to its Board of Directors with responsibility to the Washoe County District Health Department.
This position has contact with the staff of base hospitals, and outlying hospitals; with physicians, public service agencies (fire, police, highway patrol) and ground ambulance personnel; patients and their families; and with various service groups for public relations and educational purposes.
This position has the authority to determine medical therapy based on the assessment of the patient in keeping with established protocols; safety decisions involving patient and aircraft/ambulance; whether or not additional equipment should be taken; in triage, who to transport and setting of priorities; and the care, inventory, and ordering of standard medical supplies.
Decisions that must be referred to the supervisor are management decisions outside established policies and procedures; flight requests outside of normal administrative guidelines - distance, search and rescue, private residence, prearranged transports, long distance transports; ride-alongs; equipment purchase and addition/deletion of different drugs; changes in medical protocol; and the coordination of public relations request.
Within this general framework, this position is accountable for the following functions:
* Successfully complete REMSA orientation program.
* Willing to work overtime as necessary.
* Provide documentation of assessment and treatment of patients by completing all necessary follow-up and nursing chart forms.
* Accompanies the Flight Nurse and Pilot on flights but does not fly without the flight nurse on patient transports.
* Provide consistent, high quality patient care as outlined by the REMSA Standard of Care, Protocols, and accepted local and national treatment doctrines.
* Responsible for all aspects of patient care from the time of patient contact until transfer to a higher level of care.
* Provide life support and reduce mortality for patients at the scene or hospital and during transport to definitive care setting.
* Provide a catalyst for absolute professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, and competency with patients, their families, the public, other agencies, coworkers, and REMSA management at all times.
* Responsible for providing documentation and timely, legible and highly accurate record keeping for appropriate agencies and physicians. Also, responsible for providing accurate documentation for statistical purposes.
* Provides patient following, immediate follow-up to requesting agency on patient status upon arrival and later follow-up on patient's progress/disposition.
* Performs general inspection and maintenance of equipment utilized on the helicopter/ambulance to ensure that the equipment is working properly. This includes restocking, ordering supplies, cleaning and arranging for the repair of all damaged equipment to ensure safety of crew and public.
* Expedites the return of the aircraft/ambulance to service by cleaning and restocking.
* Provides a smooth and efficient exchange of equipment and user agency equipment.
* Maintains all required certifications and licenses along with a commitment of self-improvement and learning.
* Maintain and improve EMS leadership skills by reading books and periodicals, and by attending classes, meetings and seminars.
* Exhibits self-motivation, initiative and flexibility while performing routine tasks along with special projects and studies.
* Provides public education to the community, students, co-workers, base hospitals, outlying hospitals and user agencies. This includes education of safety regarding helicopter and ambulance operations.
* Provide feedback to management for improvement of working conditions, patient care, and system performance.
* Other duties as assigned.
