We are seeking applications, on an ongoing basis, for geology adjunct instructors and substitutes at Renton Technical College (RTC). The Dean of General Education reviews applications as needed to fill openings during the 2023-24 academic year. Please see Terms of Employment for further compensation details. This position will remain open until filled.   

RTC offers just one class in this area: GEOL&101 Introduction to Physical Geology, which enrolls an incredibly diverse group of students. The course includes laboratory experiences, and we prefer to use open educational resource (OER) or low-cost materials. We are particularly interested in candidates who are available for in-person instruction. 

Renton Technical College, located southeast of Seattle, has provided quality education in a variety of occupations for over 80 years. Our professional-technical certificate and degree programs offer entry and mid-level training in the areas of allied health, trades and industry, culinary, business, technology and automotive.   • Provide leadership in working to improve access and successful educational outcomes for underrepresented student populations.
  • Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations) and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Effectively teach the adopted curricula for geology lecture and lab.  
  • Design inclusive instructional strategies, including classroom, small group and individualized instruction, to reach all students, and select and evaluate the materials needed to implement these strategies.  
  • Work effectively with students from academically, culturally and economically diverse backgrounds.  
  • Evaluate student progress towards attaining the learning outcomes, including thoughtfully designed individual assignments, projects, quizzes, and standardized tests.  
  • Maintain and submit student records, documentation, and program reports, including annual assessment reports on assigned general education student learning outcomes.   
  • Demonstrated leadership or participation in institutional programs with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.   
  • Master’s degree in geology or other graduate degree with substantial credits in geology, geosciences, or earth sciences.
  • Ability to design in-person and online learning experiences that are interactive and respectful of cultural differences.  
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals whose first language is not English.  
  • Ability to work effectively and engage with adult learners.   
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.   
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.   
  • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.  
  • Speaker of a language in addition to English is preferred– preference for top spoken languages in the RTC service area (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, Chinese).

 In the interest of providing a healthy, safe and secure educational and work environment, and in order to meet the requirements of federal legislation, it is the policy of Renton Technical College to maintain an alcohol and drug-free workplace for our employees and students.

This is an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis.  Lecture (theory) credits are compensated at $900 per credit, which includes scheduled class time and final exam days.  Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $991 per credit, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.  Guided Practice (lab) credits for adjunct faculty are paid $1,167.74 per credit.  Science classes with lab are $4,679.74 for 5 credits.  

Degree Stipend:
Master’s or Doctorate degree stipends are paid on a prorated per credit rate quarterly.
  • Quarterly Master's stipend: $888 
  • Quarterly Doctorate stipend: $1,777 

The person hired is required to provide authorization for employment in the United States.  All offers of employment are contingent to background checks, including employment and required degree/credential verification. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment, but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform successfully in the position. Finalists are required to complete the Sexual Misconduct Disclosure form as required under RCW 288.112.080. Post offer, pre-employment criminal background checks are also required.
