Position Summary:
- Accountable for the direct supervision of the refining, degassing and casting processes to assure achievement of departmental productivity, cost, quality and safety goals.

Essential duties and responsibilities which must be performed in order to carry out the position purpose summarized above:
- Supervises refining process; assures correct chemistries and temperature. Makes heat changes.
- Supervises degassing process to assure product quality and temperature control.
- Monitors speed of Caster and Melt Shop production; adjusts to meet processing needs and maximize production.
- Monitors every heat opening; sets up parameters.
- Monitors tonnage; determines number of heats.
- Monitors flex caster, billets and billet lengths.
- Reviews computer programs; perform line-up changes, heat intermixes and Chem Lab computer.
- Tracks, plans and updates production reports.
- Assures ship-outs and scrap material is correctly labeled.
- Review and approve employee timecards in Kronos to ensure accuracy before the pay cycle closes.
- Responsible for implementing Step 1 of the grievance process pursuant to applicable collective bargaining agreements.
- Supervises staff: administers the basic labor agreement, trains and assigns employees; monitors performance; and administers discipline. Approves scheduling and overtime.
- Implements safety policies and procedures; makes safety contacts and maintains safety records.
- Troubleshoots operational problems; identifies and implements corrective actions.
- Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement and cost reduction.
- Assures conformance to all quality standards and assists with maintenance of the quality management systems (TS 16949).
Qualifications:
Specific knowledge, training, or skills required to perform the duties of this position. Specific concepts, courses, training programs or required certifications:
- Associate’s degree in a technical field of study or equivalent training and experience.
- Knowledge of primary steelmaking and casting.
- Basic understanding of metallurgical practices.
- Basic mechanical maintenance skills.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills.
- Demonstrated experience in applying OSHA, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards.
- Demonstrated computer skills: Access, word processing, spreadsheets, data analysis and administration; email and internet.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills: ability to relate to all types of people; demonstrated trust and integrity.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills; technical report writing skills.
- Demonstrated decision making skills.
