Position Summary
The Controls Technician performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties to perform installation, programming, inspection, testing, and repair of pneumatic, electric, electronic, and digital control equipment related to air conditioning, fume hoods, exhaust systems, chilled and hot water systems, and other HVAC building controls. The Controls Technician position includes the efficient operation of HVAC controls and campus building automation systems to meet both comfort and conservation requirements.
Salary: $22 an hour/ commensurate with experience
Essential Functions
- Completes non-complex work requests for the installation, inspection, testing and repair of pneumatic, electrical and electronic control equipment related to air conditioning, fume hood and exhaust systems
- Accurately documents work performed
- Finds, confirms and implements methods to fully utilize and improve existing systems to assure the most efficient overall campus energy utilization
- Performs a daily review of the system, troubleshoots and makes sure necessary changes are made in programming and calibration to assure proper operation of controls and instrumentation
- Identifies energy conservation measures (ECM's) throughout the campus by making visual inspections and identifying deficiencies
- Assists with troubleshooting and analysis to assure maximum reliability and efficiency
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
- Coordinates incident escalation procedures both internally and with third-party vendors
- Participates in an after-hours on-call rotation
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Two years of related experience in HVAC, Building Automation, Controls and/or Instrumentation
Required Skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Proficient communication skills both oral and written
- Knowledge of electrical and/or pneumatic prints
- Follow instructions and work with multiple priorities - Exceptional problem solving and analytical skills
- Ability to operate a PC and job-related applications
- Demonstrated ability to use basic hand tools and electrical meters
- Advanced ability to work with technical personnel, senior university staff and the general campus community
Preferred Qualifications
- AAS in some form of technology
- Fluency with programming HVAC building control systems, especially Siemens Building Technologies, Tridium (Niagara AX), and Distech Controls and Automation
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50-80 pounds several times each day
- Requires walking or standing up to eight hours per day
- Other physical requirements of the job include the ability to bend/crouch/or kneel, lift, see, reach, climb, and balance
- Must be able to move throughout the assigned areas, as work is performed indoors and outdoors
- Must be able to climb ladders, enter low mechanical spaces, and work at different height elevations
Essential Personnel
This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.
