Materials Manager
The Material Handling Manager is responsible for the people, processes, procedures and related controls that deliver the efficient flow of material for our plant operation; from the time the raw material arrives at our facility, until the time finished goods are successfully received at the outbound distribution center. The Material Handling Manager is a hand on, working manager accountable for the design, documentation, implementation, audit and continuous improvement for all material handling standard work, projects and related systems.
Essential Functions
- Hire, train, develop, motivate and retain staff using hands-on leadership techniques while supporting a safe, performance based environment
- Execute Plant’s safety program by being a champion for safety and treating it as a priority
- Proactively plan and establish labor models and related schedules that align to business needs
- Responsible for key recall/withdrawal activities and accuracy as a key member of plant recall/withdrawal team
- Understands the allergen control procedures and implements the allergen storage requirements. Trains and audits the material handling team to meet all allergen control procedures
- Responsible for raw material and packaging consumption posting in ERP, ensuring inventory accuracy. Develops systems to ensure proper stock rotation, consumption, and reporting of lot information on material usage, including food contact packing materials to meet lot and quantity traceability requirements
- Serve as back up for scheduler, dock/production clerks, and production supervision as needed
- Manage payroll entry for material handling personnel, reviewing & approving time card entry
- Key plant operations leader for the process design and execution of all cycle count and physical inventory events
- Design, implement and maintain receiving processes, procedures and related controls that minimize dock to stock time, allowing for the timely receipt of material.
- In coordination with Quality, design and implement standard procedures for validating raw material and packaging quality at time of receipt, as per material specifications.
- Manage expected inbound Purchase Orders (PO’s) process for the facility, alerting stakeholders to late/missing deliveries and executing corrective action as appropriate.
- Design, implement and maintain put away procedures in alignment to the facility’s Warehouse Management policies.
- Design, implement and maintain picking processes, procedures and related controls for the facility ensuring proper FEFO rotation and manufacturability needs (i.e., tempering, etc.)
- Design, implement and maintain staging processes that deliver the right material, to the right place, at the right time.
- Identify and maintain staging locations for each material, by line
- Manage expectations and measure results for staging materials at the line, to achieve < 1% downtime as a result of handling
- Design, implement and maintain put away procedures and related controls for left over raw material from production runs, aligning with FEFO rotation practices
- Accountable for proper warehouse management procedures, including warehouse space planning needs and implementation of 5S system; owns organization of all dry, cooler, freezer and yard (trailer) locations
- Ensure all warehouse locations are always SQF compliant, neat, clean, organized, and audit ready at all times.
- Ensure raw material is staged for following shift and validated for next day
- Design, implement and maintain shipping/transfer processes, procedures and related controls; including reconciliation of FG transfers
- Design, implement and maintain procedures and related controls for the proper configuration, palletizing, wrapping, labeling, and loading of all finished goods for transfer to Distribution Center(s)
- Establish checklists for outbound transfers in alignment to our SQF and internal procedures.
- Design, implement and maintain shuttle route processes, priorities and operating activity to ensure the effective utilization of labor and equipment that align to plant needs
- Oversee 3PL provider of dedicated shuttle program
- Assess, develop and drive plans to improve business processes with the goal of reducing variability of raw & pack availability and inventory levels – support the implementation of associated tools or systems to drive improvement
- Establish appropriate on hand target inventory levels for key raw ingredient and packaging materials to minimize disruption to production output, working closely with procurement
- Lead plant inventory management processes, procedures and related operational controls (aligning with plant controller); including:
- Establishment and adherence of cycle count process/program
- Development of physical inventory process and related calendar
- Establishment of inventory adjustment process
- Complete analysis for the following:
- SLOB inventory (slow moving/obsolete)
- Inventory & cycle count results
Basic Qualifications
- A.S, B.S. or B.A. degree in supply chain, logistics, operations management. APICS certifications of CPIM and/or CPSC preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in warehousing, material handling or materials supervision in a manufacturing environment
- 5 years of experience in a warehousing and material handling environment
- Previous experience both using and building processes enabled by an ERP System
- Proven record of refining business processes to drive operational improvement
- Certified or the capability to be certified on various forklift applications
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience in the food industry
- Demonstrated capability to supervise, mentor and lead a team of 8-20 people (admin & material handlers)

Work Environment
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and power industrial truck. The employee is frequently exposed to cold, wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for the duration of the production shift; talk or hear; use hands or finger to handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is infrequently required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 70 pounds.
