Job Purpose

To provide effective and efficient maintenance and repair on the Cooperative’s transportation and line related equipment.

Duties & Reponsibilities

  • Inspect and repair trucks, cranes, bulldozers, backhoes, skid steers and other heavy equipment for proper performance
  • Diagnose faults using computerized testing equipment
  • Adjust equipment and replace faulty parts
  • Repair damaged equipment parts
  • Clean, lubricate, and conduct routine services on all vehicles
  • Clean and service of machine attachments like winches, blades, and side booms
  • Perform major repair work when necessary
  • Perform corrective repairs that will prohibit vehicles from passing inspection and/or may be documented on Driver’s Vehicle Inspection Report
  • Report damaged or faulty equipment to management
  • Replace vehicle engines, steering mechanisms, transmissions and braking systems
  • Check vehicle lighting systems
  • Test drive vehicles to gauge performance
  • Perform preventative maintenance on service trucks
  • Maintain detailed records of serviced vehicles and enter data on iVUE Fleet Management/Service Request database (work logs, repairs, and maintenance records)
  • Adhere to an inspection procedure check list
  • Maintain a parts inventory and order new parts as needed (i.e. tires, filters, etc.)
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the shop and/or assigned fleet
  • Perform other activities as needed
  • Follow all safety guidelines for the operation of equipment and chemicals
  • Assist with completing monthly property inspections, etc.
  • Learn and comply with Cooperative’s safety rules, policies and procedures
  • Maintain confidential information

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Texas Class “A” Interstate CDL (Commercial Drivers License)
  • Degree or diploma in mechanical or automotive engineering
  • Proven work experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic; minimum 3 years’ experience with Ford, Dodge, Freightliner and International models, preferred
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Diesel Certification, desirable
  • Advanced knowledge of diesel engine components
  • Knowledgeable with TxDOT rules and regulations
  • Proficient with maintenance and repair tools
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals
  • Good organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Insurable with the Cooperative's auto insurance carrier
  • Possess good oral and written communications skills in the English language
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain a harmonious working relationship with all Cooperative employees
  • Must be or become certified in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED

Working Conditions

  • Work outside under various weather conditions
  • Subject to irregular hours; may include nights, holidays and weekends, as needed
  • To ensure all employees are provided with drug-free and alcohol-free working conditions, pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable cause and random drug and alcohol tests are conducted on all employees

  • Required to pass a physical examination when employed
  • Must have sufficient health to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job
  • Requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and carrying of weights
  • Sitting/standing/walking for extended period of time

Rio Grande Electric Cooperative, Inc. (RGEC) was organized in 1945 to enhance the quality of life for rural residents by providing electric service where none existed. Today, at over 35,000 square miles, RGEC has the largest service territory of any electric cooperative in the contiguous United States, serving 18 counties in Texas, and two counties in New Mexico. While it still serves rural areas, many metropolitan areas have expanded into RGEC’s territory, which now includes hospitals, schools, and urban housing developments. The Cooperative was also selected by the military to be the electrical maintenance provider for Fort Bliss, El Paso, and Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio.

RGEC currently employs a compliment of 169 people to serve 7,163 members with 14,423 meters. It maintains offices in Alpine, Brackettville, Carrizo Springs, Dell City, El Paso, and Fort Stockton, with the Brackettville office serving as corporate headquarters. The Co-op maintains 10,039 miles of energized line of which 126 miles are transmission line, 202 miles are underground line, and 9,711 are overhead energized line. RGEC maintains the electrical distribution systems for Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, and Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas.
