We are looking for a Senior Manager – Resource Evaluation & Development to be responsible for creating and protecting value and accelerating the rate of discovery through global leadership within technical resource evaluation disciplines.

This is a great opportunity for a person with significant resource evaluation experience to lead Rio Tinto Explorations’ (RTX) team of subject matter experts, each with high technical competency within the resource evaluation disciplines (Resource Modelling and Estimation, Pit optimization and Technical Evaluation).

Reporting to the Head of Resource and Commodity Knowledge and working in an exciting and challenging environment within the Exploration Technical Knowledge team, you will:

  • Draw on technical expertise globally, and allocating this expertise across broad and variable environments and jurisdictions primarily within the Exploration Technical Knowledge, RTX regional groups and the broader Rio Tinto Group; and
  • Provide insightful evaluation of RTX projects and third-party opportunities by: developing business cases and alternative development pathways, rapidly assessing opportunities, providing input to due diligence aspects of transactions
  • Provide technical data that supports a convincing case for the early stage investment decisions that need to be made on all of Rio Tinto’s future growth assets
  • Assist with risk management by identifying and communicating impact of key technical risks requiring mitigation and/or management to ensure the successful progression from discovery through to resource development
  • Ensure the minimum appropriate data is collected to support the advancement of the project and successful transfer to the product group
  • Provide technical support that enables the regional teams to effectively manage relationships with junior exploration companies, joint venture partners

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Significant experience operating within technical resource evaluation disciplines (e.g. Resource Estimation, Resource Valuation, Engineering, Technical Due Diligence)
  • Understanding of orebody knowledge, resource evaluation and operations and a track record of generating practical and innovative solutions to multi-faceted technical and/or operational problems.
  • Broad experience covering
    • Planning processes, systems and tools across all time horizons.
    • Technical studies, concept to feasibility level.
    • Understanding of mine economics and evaluation techniques.
    • Good understanding of the mine value chain and interactions including trade off decisions and value creation
    • Promoting and driving the understanding of the interdependent relationships between geology, mining and processing in terms of overall process and financial efficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to build constructive relationships and a capacity to influence staff at all levels, including senior group management
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and negotiation skills including technical report writing and presentation.
  • Track record of operational and management effectiveness, working successfully in various countries and with different cultures.
