The Opportunity
We are looking for Multiple Specialist - Control Room (Metals) to manage and optimize the smelter processes. This includes verbal management of area personnel via radio and accountability for optimizing area resources to safely meet production targets from the central control room. The Specialist’s focus is to lead the safe, efficient, and sustainable production of copper.
At Rio Tinto we have operations across the globe including a range of open pit and underground mines that supply copper and diamonds. Our copper operations supply products in China, Japan and the US which plays an important role in almost every home, office and vehicle. We are also one of the world's leading diamond producers and the largest producer of natural colored diamonds.
What the role entails
This role is a great opportunity to joins the ranks of management at one of only two copper smelters in the USA. Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, you will be:
- Driving zero harm behavior as a safety leader at the smelter while ensuring the quality and accuracy of Control Room Logs and Reports
- Effectively communicating and coordinating with peers from within the team, different departments, and different parts of the value stream to safely meet production and quality targets
- Identifying areas for improvement within the control systems and process to maximize efficiency
- Taking ownership over efficient/effective problem solving, decision making, and action at the right levels and for escalating when appropriate
- Responsibility for fielding calls to the emergency phone and directing resources to respond to incidents
- Closely monitoring control systems to optimize performance and ensuring the operating strategies are clearly communicated to the team for each shift
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- A High school diploma or GED
- 3 years of experience in mining, processing, manufacturing or a related field
- Prior supervisory and control room experience
- Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- A Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Prior experience working in a Collective Bargaining Agreement environment

Where you’ll be working
Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903, and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
