Summary:

The clinical educator demonstrates an advanced level of critical and theoretical knowledge of ICU, telemetry, and medical nursing. This individual is responsible for enhancing the quality of critical nursing and provides staff education both formally and informally. This individual also ensures compliance with regulatory agencies and current evidence based practices. This individual supports the nursing staff in the delivery of patient care, with special attention to the care and needs of the adult cardiac, neuro, and surgical patients within Riverside Medical Center and the Community.
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing, MSN preferred. As of 1/1/18 must obtain BSN with 4 years of hire or transfer.
  • Has a minimum of 5-7 years of critical care experience and demonstrates clinical competence

License or Certification Requirements:

  • Current Illinois Registered Nurse License
  • Current Illinois Clinical Nurse Specialist License preferred
  • CPR certification
  • Current ACLS certification
  • CCRN preferred
  • Membership in the American College of Healthcare Executives is desirable

Responsibilities:

  • Assists staff with developing, initiating, and providing patient/family education.
  • Assists the Nurse Managers & Team Leaders in analyzing existing nursing practice, reviewing the findings, implementing and monitoring corrective action, including QA/QI studies.
  • Chairs and/or serves on appropriate nursing and medical center committees.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop standards of quality care that meet the needs of patients, family and the community.
  • Follows a caseload of selected critical care patients that have special needs.
  • Functions as an IV resource person and a general resource person to staff, acts as consultant to other departments and physicians.
  • Initiates or collaborates in problem solving related to high risk, high volume patients, patients with complications, and patients with discharge planning needs.
  • Meets with sales representatives to evaluate new technology and supplies for cost effectiveness.
  • Oversees perception new orientees and organizes new learning experiences for them.
  • Participates in research clinical trials.
  • Provides formal and informal staff education based on the needs of the staff, including orientation to unit, in-services, continuing education and competency testing.
  • Researches nursing problems and issues and then provides information to the staff.
  • Resource person for special procedures.

Blood and Body Fluids: Diagnostic composite of patients, frequent contact with intravenous devices, and high potential for contact with contaminated body fluids (blood, stool, vomitus) and administration of blood does create a high risk. use of needleless IV system, universal precautions and protective equipment minimize risk.
TB or Airborne Pathogens: Patient diagnostic presentations do pose high risk; however usage of protective wear and universal precautions reduces risk.

Speech: Required to communicate with patient/families/staff/MD's.
Vision: Ability to read reports, memos, literature, ability to read machines.
Smell: Helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood; electrical/fire safety.
Hearing: Necessary to hear alarms, hear patient verbalizations, telephone communication, listening to patient/employee concerns.
Touch: Necessary to write, computer entry, filing.

Lifting of patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Lifting equipment - carry 25'-150' waist high (IV bags, patient trays). Carry charts 25'-150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35 lbs. Carry fire extinguishers up or down 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.
