The Physical Therapist Assistant, under the supervision of a Physical Therapist, treats disabilities, injuries and diseases through the use of massage, exercise and effective properties of water, heat, light rays, and electricity, according to the prescription of a physician. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Must hold active license for this state or a permit from licensing board while awaiting licensure examination. 2. Must have completed training in accordance with minimum requirements for Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant schools as prescribed by the American Physical Therapy Association. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. Provides patient care treatment and modalities according to the direction and treatment plan established by the physical therapist. Treatment may involve various caseloads, such as, but not limited to: In-house hospital services, home health, or hospital agreements with other organizations which may necessitate actual treatment outside of the hospital campus. 3 In coordination with the physical therapist, implements the patient’s plan of care and treatment program in an efficient and competent manner. 5 Prepares and maintains all physical therapy patient care records including the patient’s daily notes; and on each patient he/she is treating in conjunction with physical therapist any correspondence for insurance needs, and discharge summaries. (Interpretation, assessment, and recommendations must be done by the physical therapist.) 7 When needed provides non-clinical duties that include: provide in-service education for staff and hospital, participates in CQI, and clerical duties such as scheduling patient treatments, billing, and auditing of charges and/or patient charts. 8 Promotes safety first with all patients by participating in patient safety training and patient protection including the needs and methods to report medical/healthcare errors and/or abuse. 1 Attends continuing education courses and/or reads relevant literature to maintain, update, and explore knowledge of the trends and care of patients in the field of physical therapy. Must be aware of the relative value and limitations of multiple pieces of equipment and skilled in the use of a broad range of modalities with a clear understanding of indications and/or contraindications of them. He/she must be able to apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and physical sciences to specialized techniques in treatment of patients and know how to position patients with various conditions for different types of treatment. Demonstrates competency as appropriate in patient care assessment for each patient population area served: Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric. 2. Knowledge of growth and development 3. Understanding of the patient’s needs and scope of treatment. 4. Understanding of the dynamics for each patient incorporating biophysical, bio-psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and discharge planning needs. 5. Knowledge of pain management to facilitate patient comfort through a proactive pain control plan. 6. Knowledge of the total care of patients, whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment, focusing on the control of pain and other symptoms.
