Reporting to the Nursing Director, and according to established policies, procedures and patient care standards, the Clinical Supervisor (CS), assumes responsibility for the coordination of all direct patient care shift to shift. Provides professional clinical direction as needed. Works closely with and directs other professional and ancillary personnel in providing total patient care. Serves as the on-site representative of Hospital Administration after hours.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports the Mission and Vision of RML Specialty Hospital by demonstrating RML's Core Values of Service, Teamwork, Accountability, Integrity, Respect and Stewardship (STAIRS) in all actions. Promotes a positive patient/customer experience by exemplifying the principles of the Language of Caring in all interactions with patients, families and coworkers.
- Directs staff to ensure that the quantity of work is accomplished within an assigned shift for each department within the Patient Care Services division. Assists staff as needed in solving patient care problems, and utilizes appropriate nursing, medical and administrative chains of command to ensure that patients' needs are met in a timely fashion. Works in collaboration with the clinical leader to create appropriate assignments for the next shift and communicates relevant patient care issues. Provides direct clinical and administrative supervision to nursing staff (registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians, unit secretaries, and care companions.) Works in collaboration with the Respiratory Care Services Lead Therapist to provide administrative supervision to the respiratory therapy staff.
- In coordination with the clinical leader, assists in development of patient care assignments for nursing staff utilizing the Optilink Staffing System to ensure a fair and reasonable distribution of workload according to individual patient needs, patient geography, technical needs of patients and the skills, abilities and need for supervision of individual staff members.
- Manages nursing division staffing needs due to absenteeism, changes in patient acuity, or other departmental variations. Determines appropriate number and qualifications of staff, and adjusts staffing as appropriate following accepted staffing guidelines utilizing the Optilink Staffing System.
- Serves as the facility-wide representative of Hospital Administration after hours. Utilizes available resources for problem solving and consultation; acts as resource for all hospital staff on assigned shift. Contacts Administrator on Call for significant or unusual events to obtain consultation and direction.
- Ensures that patient care incidents are responded to appropriately and are fully documented during the shift of occurrence, and that report is given to the nurse manager and/or clinical for immediate follow-up. Depending upon the nature of the event, immediately contacts administration as appropriate.
- Intervenes as necessary to correct staff behaviors and re-direct work. Corrects and counsels or disciplines staff who are not complying with hospital policy or appropriately completing any assigned work. Documents interventions and provides appropriate department manager with written description of actions taken. Provides input to clinical leader and/or nurse managers from direct staff observation on staff performance for incorporation into formal performance evaluation.
- Responds to all Rapid Responses, cardiac arrest (Code) situations, fires, or any type of disaster or incident in the facility. Follows facility emergency and disaster policies for appropriate response. Contacts Administrator on Call as appropriate to situation.
- Responds and directs the provision of care to patients presenting for emergency services. Secures appropriate physician care and documents interventions and disposition according to facility policies.
- Ensures that non-patient care tasks are assigned and performed on the designated shift, including but not limited to the following: checking the crash cart and documenting seal, performing narcotic count, etc. Ensures that accurate narcotic counts are performed and documented on each unit according to policy and any discrepancies are reported directly to the clinical leader and/or nurse manager.
- Evaluates environmental safety and provides environment that is safe for the patient based on age and developmental status of the adult and geriatric patient. Promotes an environment that is safe for self and staff, reporting unsafe conditions, and by using appropriate safe work practices such as proper body mechanics and applicable safety devices (patient lift and transfer equipment, safety needles and sharps disposal, PPE, etc.) Complies with Employee Health policies regarding illness and injury.
- Supports formal and informal quality and performance improvement activities. Identifies opportunities for improvement and collaborates with other clinical supervisors, clinical leader and/or nurse managers and nursing directors to effect change. Demonstrates initiative and follow-through to effect sustained improvements.
- Acts as the representative of the department and Administration in responding to concerns or complaints of patients and visitors. Provides appropriate immediate intervention and response. Demonstrates concern, listens carefully, and attempts to reduce immediate stress. Follows up appropriately with clinical leader and/or nurse manager for further resolution.
- Ensures that any employee injury is reported immediately and documented. Secures emergency care (911) if necessary, or directs staff member for appropriate follow-up. On off-shifts intervenes immediately with any employee sustaining an exposure to a bloodborne pathogen. Obtains post exposure kit and follows all directions; ensures that actions are documented.
- Maintains confidentiality of staff and patient personal and medical information verbally, online and in print. Complies with all hospital policies related to computer use and system security. Maintains HIPAA security.
- Exercises positive, sensitive and respectful interpersonal skills at all times. Conducts self in a professional manner, demonstrating the core values of responsibility, respect, and honesty, and serves as a role model for other staff. Intervenes to prevent inappropriate communications among staff, especially in patient care or public areas. Maintains a professional work environment.

The ability to organize staff and prioritize patient care needs in an efficient manner so as to effectively accomplish the workload for an assigned shift.
The clinical knowledge and analytical ability to assess a patient's condition and utilize the nursing process in directing the provision of comprehensive care to the patient.
The interpersonal skills necessary to interact positively with patients, families, medical personnel and other members of the healthcare team.
The physical ability for constant standing and walking; transferring patients, lifting and carrying supplies and equipment.
The ability to perform effectively and efficiently under the pressure of stressful or emergency situations.
Support staff to work with high technology equipment,
Knowledge and Experience
Demonstrated leadership skills in prior roles.
Experience with medically complex and mechanically ventilated patients preferred.
License & Certifications
Licensed as a Professional Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
Current CPR certification.
Two years recent acute care experience required.
ACLS Certification required, or may obtain within 90 days of employment.
Bachelor of Science in nursing or related healthcare field...
Critical care experience.
Prior experience in a leadership role, such as team leader, relief charge nurse, charge nurse, or supervisor.
