Roanoke County Public Schools is accepting applications for a Life Counselor position for the 2024-25 school year.

The role of the Life Counselor will be to lead individuals and foster empowerment with our students. Counselors will demonstrate the ability to establish productive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members. Counselors will provide individual and group counseling to students along with performing a variety of additional roles and functions.



Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:

Approved mental health education to parents, students & staff:
  • Signs of Suicide (SOS)/Suicide prevention programs
  • Trauma Informed Care
  • Mental health topics related to individual school needs
  • Children's Theatre

Individual & Group Counseling:
  • Individual counseling as needed for students
  • Mental health assessments as needed
  • Group counseling (minimum expectation of 10 groups per year)

Crisis Intervention:
  • Assess students and provide resources for students and families
  • Serve on school crisis team
  • Leads student support interventions before, during, and after crisis situations



Threat Assessment Team Member:
  • Attend required threat assessment training as offered
  • Participate in all threat assessments in assigned schools

Youth Risk Behavior Survey:
  • Administer to all middle and high school students
  • Report data for assigned school to Core Team.
  • Using data, counselor will monitor trends and develop plans to address needs of students and follow up as needed.

Bullying Education & Prevention:
  • Provide staff training on bullying prevention, intervention, reporting and policy (train the trainer model)
  • Provide student education on bullying prevention and reporting
  • Implement evidenced based bullying curriculum with fidelity
  • Lead bullying committee through school's core team

Core Team Facilitator:
  • Lead core team meetings
  • Schedule bi-weekly meetings to discuss attendance, at risk students, bullying and any additional student needs
  • Create an action plan at each meeting and review progress towards the action plan
  • Ensure follow-up on recommendations/action plan
  • Communicate with parents and staff as needed to support students

Substance Abuse:
  • Provide education to students, staff, and parents
  • Facilitate the policy violation contract
  • Lead and participate in the 2 day Substance Abuse Program
  • Lead the Prevention & Wellness Club at your school
  • Attend Prevention Council and other meetings as assigned

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports:
  • Coach for school-wide prevention program
  • Provide training for students, staff, and parents
  • Serve on the PBIS District Core Team

SWIS Manager:
  • Enter and disaggregate data
  • Share data with Core Team
  • Interpret data from SWIS and implement PBIS interventions for students and staff

Other Duties as required:
  • Attend LIFE Counselor meetings
  • Attend staff trainings
  • Attend community meetings and serve on panels as directed
  • Attend child study, 504, and IEP meetings as requested
  • Maintain case logs, progress notes, and individual student tracking forms and submits monthly as required
  • Perform other duties as requested by Central Counseling
  • Comply with confidentiality regulations and laws
  • Follow all RCPS policies and procedures



Minimum Job Requirements/Qualifications:

Be able to perform multiple, highly complex technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; Be able to communicate effectively to implement desired actions; Be flexible to independently or collaboratively work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; Be able to analyze data and reports to help determine student needs within the division; Be able to establish professional relationships and communicate effectively with administration, faculty, and parents; Be able to set priorities and meet deadlines; Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

Education and Experience:

Master's Degree in Counseling Related Field

Licensed in Virginia as an LPC, LCSW or LMFT. Will consider license eligible candidates.

Experienced with children and adolescents, required
