Laboratory Medical Technologist

Position Summary:
Job Location: 77 West Barney Street, Gouverneur, NY 13642

Work Hours: Three 12 hour shifts each week; plus another one 8 hour shift every two weeks for a total of 40 hours per week. Typical work hours are 7am to 7 pm (but may vary).

Annual Salary: $30 - $45 per hour

Job Duties: Responsible for performing a wide variety of Laboratory procedures, records and controls on tissue, blood, exudates and other body fluids in Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Hematology, Clinical Microscopy, Serology and other tests to obtain data for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease.


Key Responsibilities:

The core job responsibilities of a Laboratory Medical Technologist position are as follows:
• Evaluates requested procedures to determine the suitability of specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained.
• Performs laboratory procedures on tissue, blood, exudates and other body fluids in Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Hematology, Clinical Microscopy, and Serology in accordance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, professional standards, lab procedures and hospital policies.
• Obtains analytical data (e.g., color end points, digital read outs, tracings, patterns, agglutinations); converts to prescribed units for reporting; and correlates data to verify results. Writes laboratory reports (identifying sample and stating methods and results); reports results to appropriate individuals. Maintains continuity, quality and accuracy of documentation to ensure results are properly and timely reported.
• Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts, and maintains instruments. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks (e.g., mechanical, optical, scintillation, gasometric, photometric, electrometric, automated). Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs; conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, and maintains proper records for quality control reports.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Bachelor’s degree in related Science (Biology, Chemistry, or the Physical /Sciences) or equivalent relevant experience as recognized by New York State Department of Education for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist. (NYS Dept of Education, Education Law, Title 8, Article 165, sub-parts 79-15; 9/23/8).


Required Licensure/Certification:
Must have New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License and International Medical Laboratory Scientist certification by ASCP

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $30.00 - $45.00
