TITLE: Special Education Teacher Aide
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School Diploma.
2. Ability to understand the medical and/or physical and mental needs of the individual child
3. Must be able to work well independently and with good judgement.
4. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff and parents.
5. Must be flexible.
6. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
7. Other qualifications as may be deemed essential for successful performance in the position.
REPORTS TO: Director Pupil Personnel Services, or Designee
JOB GOAL: To assist the teacher achieve teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole.

To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists the special education department in meeting the goals of the student's Individualized Educational Plan.
2. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
3. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
4. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
5. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.
6. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
7. Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
8. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips and duties, etc.
9. Assists with large group activities, such as drill work, reading aloud, and story telling.
10. Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
11. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make up work, as assigned by the teacher.
12. Assists with lunch, snack and cleanup routines.
13. Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
14. Checks and records student attendance.
15. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
16. Attends meetings when required.
17. Keeps sense of humor.
18. Knows how to react in emergency situations.
19. At the discretion of the regular classroom teacher, serves as a substitute in his/her absence.
20. Performs other such duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Director or designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine months with extended service as approved by the School Board. Salary and other terms and conditions of employment shall be governed by negotiated contract.
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Director, or Designee, in accordance with School Board policy.
