Organizational Background
Rocking the Boat began as a boatbuilding afterschool project for high school students in the South Bronx and was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit in 2001. Today, the organization, with an annual budget of over $3.7 million, is a hub of youth development programming that serves nearly 2,500 community members annually. The mediums of boatbuilding, environmental science, and sailing are paired with social-emotional, academic, and career counselling by a team of licensed social workers to have profound and lasting impact on participants.

Position Summary
Rocking the Boat’s Community Rowing Coordinator and Public Programs Assistant is a non-exempt seasonal summer position that will support all Public Program activity from mid-May to mid-September. This includes taking a leading role in promoting, organizing, overseeing, and administering Rocking the Boat’s Community Rowing, Sailing, and Birding programs every Saturday from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend as well as supporting all other Group and Middle School Summer Camp programs. The Community Rowing Coordinator and Public Program Assistant reports to the Public Programs Manager.

Responsibilities

Lead Community Rowing, Birding, and Sailing

  • Coordinate program promotion and outreach
  • Hire, schedule, and manage up to 10 Community Rowing staff members
  • Manage all program set up and break down including maintenance and upkeep of related equipment including tents, tables, boats, oars, PFDs, etc. and all program materials, Rocking the Boat signage, and promotional materials
  • Ensure that Community Rowing staff follow Rocking the Boat’s safety protocols, demonstrating safe rowing, boat handling, and communication
  • Manage the boat ride sign-up process
  • Collaborate with on-site Sailing staff to facilitate sailing program
  • Oversee program administration including ensuring liability waivers are signed by all participants, collecting digital post-row satisfaction surveys, maintaining an accurate accounting of participants daily and throughout the season, and reporting staff hours worked to the Public Programs Manager

Group and Middle School Summer Camp Support

  • Lead groups of students and adults in a variety of boat- and water-based environmental education activities
  • Assist in reviewing and implementing existing Public Programs curriculum, educational materials, and activity plans
  • Assist in lesson planning and program preparation
  • Incorporate and promote Rocking the Boat’s Core Values into all aspects of program delivery
  • Actively practice and promote all safety protocols in the shop and on the water
  • Manage participant behavior to facilitate an effective and safe learning environment
  • Complete other tasks as necessary to fulfill the mission of Rocking the Boat


Requirements:

  • Experience teaching hands-on education in the classroom and outdoors
  • Experience managing staff
  • Be comfortable on the water and in boats
  • Must be available Saturdays from May 25th through August 31st
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • First aid and CPR Certified (if not already, will receive on the job)
  • Ability to lead groups through high-energy, physically challenging activities on both land and water
  • Ability to think independently while working as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate honestly, respectfully, and effectively with supervisors and coworkers
  • Spanish language skills a plus
  • Rocking the Boat alumnus a plus


Rocking the Boat offers:

  • A seasonal position of 35 hours/week for 15 weeks
  • Up to 40 Safe and Safe hours per calendar year, accrued at a rate of one hour of Safe and Sick time earned to every 15 hours worked
  • Opportunity to work with a creative, well-funded organization committed to community development and youth empowerment.
  • Salary ranging from $22 to $25 per hour, commensurate with experience
