Position: Collections Specialist - Part-Time

Job Overview:

We are in search of a part-time Collections Specialist to champion the stewardship and dynamic showcasing of our museum’s collections at the Rocky Mount State Historic Site. This role embodies the intersection of preservation, education, and community engagement, making it integral to both our operational efficacy and educational outreach.

Key Responsibilities:

Collection Management and Maintenance:

    *Oversee the care, cataloging, and conservation of the museum’s collections, ensuring their longevity and accessibility. *Conduct routine maintenance checks and manage the cleaning of historic furniture within the museum and historic houses to preserve their condition. *Maintain accurate documentation and records associated with the collection, ensuring historical integrity and accessibility.

Exhibit Development:

    *Lead the development and rotation of exhibits, ensuring they are engaging, informative, and reflective of the museum’s historical essence. *Collaborate with staff to design and install exhibits, ensuring a seamless transition and maintenance of display areas.

Educational Program Support:

    *Assist in developing and delivering school group programming that seamlessly integrates the museum’s collections, enriching the educational value. *Provide training and resources to staff involved in educational programming to ensure accurate representation of the collection and historical context.

Community and Donor Engagement:

    *Serve as a primary point of contact for individuals wishing to donate artifacts, managing the acquisition process and ensuring a positive donor experience. *Engage with visitors and educational groups to share the historical significance of the collection, the site, and answer inquiries regarding the collection or specific items.

Historical Knowledge:

    *Maintain a robust understanding of the history of the museum and the Rocky Mount State Historic Site, serving as a resource for staff and visitors. *Foster a culture of historical curiosity and appreciation, enhancing the visitor experience and educational outreach.

Qualifications:

    *Preferred minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar role, preferably within a museum or historic site setting. *Strong understanding of US and Tennessee history. *Proficiency in collections management software and basic office software. *Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively with a team. *Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for engaging with the community, donors, and educational groups.

Expected Schedule:

    *This role works up to 20 hours per week, with an average of 10-15 hours per week. *Expected to work 3 to 4 days a week from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, inclusive of a 30-minute lunch break.

Available shifts and compensation: Available shifts all days except Sundays and Saturdays. Compensation is $9.00 - $12.00/hour.
