Roku is changing how the world watches TV
Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform in the U.S., and we've set our sights on powering every television in the world. Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Our mission is to be the TV streaming platform that connects the entire TV ecosystem. We connect consumers to the content they love, enable content publishers to build and monetize large audiences, and provide advertisers unique capabilities to engage consumers.
From your first day at Roku, you'll make a valuable — and valued — contribution. We're a fast-growing public company where no one is a bystander. We offer you the opportunity to delight millions of TV streamers around the world, while gaining meaningful experience across a variety of disciplines.
About the role
With so many people using our products globally, we've become well-known for products that "just work" right out of the box and integrate almost by magic. That doesn't happen by accident, which is why we are committed to making sure our products aren't just intuitive, they're obvious. To support that commitment, the Roku OS team focuses on building a streaming platform that is best in industry at understanding customer requests. Our goal is to help people find what they want and make it easier for people to stream. We accomplish this using state of the art technology and engineering to make it happen, with consideration for the customer as the center of all that we do.
We are looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead the architecture, development and roadmap of our Roku OS team. If you are fanatical about driving business value, passionate about building sustainable consumer facing products and solutions, energetic about abstracting problem complexity into simple and intuitive-to-use OS features, innovative in developing SDKs and APIs, read on and apply!
We are seeking a natural-born problem solver, who loves taking on new challenges, learns quickly/eagerly, is concise and articulate in speech and writing. Someone who can make tough decisions without excessive agonizing, while challenging norms to deliver great results. You should find this exciting and enjoy the idea of working with a team of excellent people to compete in this space.
What you'll be doing
- Working very closely with your team, as well as broader business organizations like Roku advertising and content programming, to determine and champion longer-term team direction and technology strategy
- Architecting and developing highly performant and scalable Ad SDKs (Roku Ad Framework, Roku Interactive Ad Framework, etc.), consumer facing features on Roku OS, meeting the demands of a rapidly growing business
- Making important design decisions around architecture and balancing long-term and short-term business deliverables
- Providing coaching, mentoring and support to the direct report staff on both technical and non-technical issues. Ensuring high productivity of your team members
- Participate as part of the scrum team to plan and commit at the sprint and release level
- Ensuring on-time and high-quality delivery of the project
- Contributing to infrastructure and process improvement within development organization. Institute and adopt best engineering practices
We're excited if you have
- 5 years of experience in a senior software leadership role
- Experience in SDK, UI/client-side framework, API design and development
- Comfort and experience splitting time between hands-on technical efforts and managing a team, working with various stakeholders, other business and engineering teams, as well as end-to-end feature development
- Experience as a software development lead or manager, building and leading highly effective teams. You have demonstrable leadership, people management and communication skills
- Strong organizational, planning and time management skills
- Ability to work through ambiguous requirements and make key decisions to make progress and evolve the platform
- BS/MS in Computer Science, or a related degree
- Hands-on with a mainstream programming language and a scripting language (e.g., C , JS, …) is a huge plus
Our unique culture
Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We're independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.
We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
