Camp Counselor Job Description
Following is a list of responsibilities:
- Supervise children, promote learning opportunities, and lead camp activities.
- Arrive prepared and on time for your shift every day.
- Assist in planning and implementing the camp curriculum that reflects the values of Roots Vacation Camps.
- Role model acceptable behaviors and decision-making for participants and peers.
- Actively participate in all related in-services, trainings, and staff meetings.
- Utilize appropriate guidance and developmental techniques with participants to create an orderly environment that is conducive to learning and child safety.
- Plan and lead games, activities, etc. during camp down time, drop-off, pick-up, or other free time.
- Maintain positive relationships with campers by showing sensitivity to campers’ emotional needs and problem solving any camper issues effectively.
- Communicate all pertinent issues affecting programs to Director and Coordinators (i.e. staff/CIT/ parent/camper/concerns, etc.), in a timely manner
- Establish good rapport with families of campers at drop-off and pick-up.
- Create a nurturing, positive and professional environment while promoting program policies and procedures amongst co-counselors, volunteers, and community participants.
- Be able to accept guidance and supervision from supervisors, as well as give feedback to co-counselor(s)
- Provide substitute coverage to other sites on an as needed basis.
Desired qualifications
- At least 16 years of age
- First Aid/CPR/AED certifications or willing to obtain within 60 days of hire.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct complex, critical problem solving independently.
- Knowledge of and ability to learn appropriate child development techniques.
- Desire to work with children and help them develop physically, mentally, and emotionally.
- Demonstrated track record of timeliness and punctuality.
While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to:
- Sit, stand, or reach for extended periods of time.
- Move around the work environment independently.
- Communicate via computer, multi-line phone, and smart phone.
- Push, pull, or lift up to 25 pounds for short periods of time.
- The noise level in the workplace is usually moderate, but may vary based on a number of external factors.

Pay: $15.00 - $16.50 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 50 per week
