Organization
RowLA is a non-profit college access outreach rowing program based in Marina del Rey that is committed to leveling the playing field and increasing the racial and socio-economic diversity in the sport of rowing. RowLA’s rowing programs serve middle and high school girls, ranging in ability from novice to highly skilled competitive rowers.
RowLA has a coaching staff of 5-6 professionals, as well as volunteers. RowLA is committed to community outreach efforts and annually reaches over 4,000-5,000 students through RowLA’s
Erg Ed program, working with public schools throughout Los Angeles. RowLA also runs learn- to-row summer camps for middle and high school students. Additionally, RowLA employs a dedicated college counselor to assist the high school juniors and seniors in achieving the highest level of college admissions possible.
Position:
RowLA is seeking an energetic, talented, and enthusiastic Executive Director to effectively guide and lead RowLA into the next phase of its development. RowLA’s Executive Director is a self- starter and action-oriented professional who thrives in a hands-on work environment, with strong leadership and management skills, who will also roll up their sleeves to get the job done, regardless of the task. The Executive Director will manage the day-to-day operations, communicate effectively with staff, athletes, and families, and excel at building and managing relationships and partnerships within the greater Los Angeles community. The Executive
Director will seek out and write grants, support RowLA's fundraising efforts, and level up the strategic direction of the program. A successful candidate will be excited to work with a diverse group of student athletes, coaching staff, Program Director, and Board of Directors, and passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of youth in the community.
The Executive Director will lead, motivate, and guide young student athletes while maintaining the highest standards of ethics, sportsmanship, and safety principles. Further the Executive
Director of RowLA is committed to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and will work to bring an understanding of culturally responsive programming, antiracist education, and personal identity development to this role.
This leadership and management role requires 30-40 hours per week. Most of the work can be done remotely but in-person meetings with community partners, funders, and others are required.
The Executive Director is also expected to spend some time at practices in the marina and attend local regattas, supporting RowLA’s overall programming.
This position will report directly to the Board Chair and be responsible for providing regular updates to the RowLA Board of Directors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Day-to-Day: supporting the staff and program in the following:
- Coordinate activities with Program Director daily
- Supervise and meet weekly with RowLA Head Coach
- Create and manage program calendars/schedule with input from the Head Coach and
Program Director
- Supervise the college counselor and college admissions visitors
- Communicate and meet with Board of Directors on a regular basis
- Maintain a database of equipment holdings
- Develop, enforce, and reevaluate organizational policies and procedures.
- Seek out best practices for safety protocols and HR management of staff
- Work with Head Coach in assuring consistent maintenance and safety of equipment
- Ideate and explore new avenues for fundraising and community awareness
- Expand RowLA’s visibility in the community
- Seek out and prepare grant applications
- Monitor grant funding and spending, working with Board Treasurer
- Provide reports to funders in a timely manner as required by grants
- Maintain and manage the relationships with funders, grantors, donors, and community partners, including Erg Ed partner schools.
- Update and maintain RowLA Policies and overseeing staff education and professional development
- Supervise RowLA’s social media and website and increase RowLA’s visibility via social media outlets
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and outward face of RowLA.
Recruiting and Regattas
- Collaborate with community stakeholders to organize wide-reaching public events, i.e. fundraising, PR events and Learn To Row days.
- Ensure a healthy pipeline of new rowers into the program
- Coordinate regatta entries and requirements with Head Coach
- Oversee travel logistics with Program Director
- Show up to cheer on the student athletes at the marina and regattas as often as possible
Logistics
- Responsibility for the overall budget
- Oversee all equipment and uniform purchase decisions
- Coordinate with Board regarding meetings and Board development activities
- Oversee all tenant relationships and agreements with LA County Beaches and Harbors
- Coordinate all insurance matters
- Coordinate all accounting and tax preparation needs with bookkeeper and CPA.
Qualifications/Requirements
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
- Management skills 3 years
- Passion for the sport of rowing or equivalent athletic affinity
- Demonstrated interest and/or experience in education and athletics

- Bilingual language skills (English and Spanish)
