Remote Eligibility
This position is eligible to be performed in a hybrid remote arrangement, but on-site time is needed. While project workloads may require more or less on a short term basis, we estimate 40% of time on-site is needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Automation Engineer is responsible for generating innovative and practical solutions to improve quality, safety, and productivity of the manufacturing process through the development of automated solutions.  The Mechanical Design focus is responsible for the design and implementation of the mechanics of the solutions.  

 

This individual will be the mechanical subject matter expert for process automation solutions and implementations for the Automation team. S/he will be a member of the Automation team and will work extensively with the other members of the team to provide working solutions.  This will include all work from concepting, testing, implementation, and production phases.  The primary objective of this team is to develop and implement these solutions in support of the company’s automation goals.

 

  • Brainstorm and develop concept ideas for presented processes.
  • Work in conjunction with the Automation team to develop the mechanics and motion of concepts. 
  • Evaluate concepts for risk both in practicality and designability. 
  • Support the development of testing solutions for risk mitigation of concepts.
  • Finish full design of accepted concepts into final designs for internal and external build tasks.
  • Work with Vendors to specify and supply components for designed automated solutions.
  • Ability to be hands on for testing and final build of solutions.
  • Support of existing automation solutions currently in production.
  • Support the development of user and machine specifications for vendors and internal use.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual, and reliable attendance as set by the supervisor according to handbook guidelines consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Abide by all safety, quality, personnel, and other policies as applicable.

 

Marginal Work Requirements:

  • Company travel via airplane and/or vehicle as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned for the good of the department and company.
  • Support implementation of new programs and methodologies.

·        Function as technical contact for internal and external communications.

Work Qualifications:

·        Formal education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent practical experience in mechanical design, emphasis in Automation development

·        Experience:  Machine design and build required. Composite experience a plus.

·        Computer Skills:  Common office applications, Demonstratable skill in Solidworks, Inventor or similar.

·        Certificates and Licenses:  3D CAD certs preferred, but not required

Professional Competencies:

  • Excellent communicator at all levels with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of machining practices and how tolerances affect machining requirements and cost.
  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and a basic knowledge of material properties (machinability, weldability, heat treatment, corrosion resistance, etc).
  • Ability to work under pressure within a high performance, fast moving environment.
  • Ability to envision, develop and sell automated solutions to company management.
  • Problem solver who likes to resolve issues.
  • Understanding of flow based methodologies including TOC, Lean, 6 Sigma as employed by REC.
