What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Worker/Counselor position at RTC - Towson?
The Sheppard Pratt School & RTC (formerly Mann RTC) is a 46-bed treatment center that serves males and females ages 12 to 21 with severe emotional and behavioral problems, who require a specialized educational environment, a therapeutic milieu, and recreational and community based activities. The average length of stay at Mann RTC is 6-11 months, with the goal of moving the adolescent back into the community as soon as they are ready. The Mann RTC is located Sheppard Pratt Health System's main campus in Towson, MD (Baltimore County), giving us direct access to our onsite mental health professionals and our inpatient hospital.
As a Social Worker/Counselor you will:
- Perform a full range of professional primary therapeutic services geared to adolescent youth and their families within a residential setting and in a Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) approved level V nonpublic school.
- Interview youths, families, and involved agencies to develop the psychosocial evaluations.
- Lead the following processes for an assigned caseload: coordination of multi-disciplinary treatment team; treatment plan development and implementation; monitoring and evaluating youths' progress; communication with families, state agencies, and community resources.
- Provide individual, family, and group therapy utilizing a variety of techniques and interventions in order to assist in resolving personal and environmental factors which prevent youth from achieving their highest level of psychosocial functioning.
- Develop and assist in the implementation of discharge and aftercare plans.
- Complete and maintain all required documentation in electronic medical record and on the educational IEP in accordance with program and Health System requirements.
- Actively participate in implementation and other committees as requested.

LGPC Requirements:
- Master's degree in counseling, psychology or related field and 6-12 months of relevant field or work experience in a clinical capacity in order to gain knowledge of psychiatric disorders, diagnoses, and therapies; clinical principles, theory and practice; and computer/documentation skills.
- Must value working in a team approached environment and a family-driven and youth-informed model of care; must demonstrate interest in learning and using a treatment model within individual, group, and family treatment that utilizes a variety of intervention approaches that are trauma-informed.
- Possession of a Maryland State Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) license at the time of appointment and continuously while in the position. Will be required to receive 100 hours of face-to-face clinical supervision provided by a board-approved supervisor and is expected to apply for the LCPC license within 2 to 3 years' of acceptance of LGPC role. Will be required to participate in a minimum of 3 hours of face-to-face supervision per month with the approved supervisor. Will be responsible for maintaining documentation, for at least 5 years, of supervisory sessions including dates, duration, and focus.
LMSW Requirements:
- MSW and 6-12 months' of relevant field or work experience in a clinical capacity in order to gain knowledge of psychiatric disorders, diagnoses, and therapies; clinical principles, theory and practice; and computer/documentation skills.
- Possession of a Maryland State Licensed Master Social Work (LMSW) license at the time of appointment and continuously throughout time in position. Will be required to receive 144 hours of supervision provided by a board-approved SPHS LCSW-C supervisor and is expected to apply and sit for the LCSW-C license within 2 to 3 years' of acceptance of LMSW role. Will be required to participate in a minimum of 3 hours of face-to-face supervision per month with the LCSW-C supervisor. Will be responsible for maintaining documentation, for at least 5 years, of supervisory sessions including dates, duration, and focus of supervision, to be available for verification to the Board.
- Must apply for and obtain MSDE SW certification as a School Social Worker within 60 days of accepting a school Social Work assignment, and must maintain this certification while in role.
- Must value working in a team approached environment and a family-driven and youth-informed model of care; must demonstrate interest in learning and using a treatment model within individual, group, and family treatment that utilizes a variety of intervention approaches that are trauma-informed.
LCPC Requirements:
- Master's degree in clinical counseling, psychology or related field and 2-3 years of experience in a mental health or chemical dependency treatment setting in order to gain knowledge of psychiatric disorders, diagnoses, and therapies; clinical principles, theory and practice; and computer/documentation skills.
- Must value working in a team approached environment and a family-driven and youth-informed model of care; must demonstrate interest in learning and using a treatment model within individual, group, and family treatment that utilizes a variety of intervention approaches that are trauma-informed.
- Possession of a Maryland State Professional Counselor license, at the certified level, at the time of appointment and continuously throughout tenure in position.
LCSW-C Requirements:
- MSW and 2-3 years' experience in a mental health or chemical dependency treatment setting in order to gain knowledge of psychiatric disorders, diagnoses, and therapies; clinical principles, theory and practice; and computer/documentation skills.
- Possession of a Maryland State Social Work license at the certified clinical (LCSW-C) level at the time of appointment and continuously while in the LCSW-C position. Depending on position, may require board approved supervisor status. In addition, Social Workers working in schools are required to have active MSDE certification as a School Social Worker at time of appointment or must apply for MSDE SW certification within 60 days of accepting a school Social Work assignment, and must maintain this certification while working in any school assignment.
