We are hiring an Industrial Fire Captain with a passion for firefighting and patient care combined with the drive to succeed and deliver high-quality care.
Job Summary:
The Industrial Fire Captain shall serve as the Shift Supervisor and shall be responsible for the supervision of the shift Emergency Response Team. The Captain will report directly to both the onsite Fire Chief and the client’s Shift Safety Supervisor or designee. The Captain will be qualified to initiate Incident Command and possibly serve as Incident Commander at the scene of any type of emergency. These emergencies could include, but are not limited to, HazMat, Fire, Rescue (confined space and high angle), Medical, and Oil Spill Response. The Captain will be responsible for the initiation of the site’s emergency plans as deemed appropriate. The Industrial Fire Captain will be responsible for the on-duty response members under their supervision. The Captain will be expected to acquire a working knowledge of all fire equipment used at the site, as well as proper maintenance and inspection of such equipment. This equipment may include, but is not limited to, all apparatus, fire pumps, extinguishers, hydrants, monitors, post indicators, and deluge/sprinkler systems. The Captain will be responsible for the training of their shift on all equipment. The Captain will be responsible for delegating duties to shift members to make sure all required tasks are completed on time. The Captain will be responsible for the proper record retention, whether paper or electronic, of required compliance related inspections. Provides direct patient care in accordance with company protocols and/or online medical direction. Assists with the coverage of open shifts as needed in the assigned area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:
Fire Suppression
- A Fire Captain manages the day-to-day operation and maintenance of a fire station and the apparatus and personnel assigned to that station.
- Fire Captains supervise a fire and rescue crew and the station apparatus dispatched to emergency scenes, including fire scenes, emergency medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, etc.
- Fire Captains may serve in the capacity of incident commander at emergency incidents.
- Fire Captains must be able to perform the duties of subordinate positions.
Operational Duties
- The Fire Captain shall respond to fire and other emergency incidents as directed by the alarm room.
- The Fire Captain shall enforce established department safety procedures.
- Fire Captains are responsible to inspect and be familiar with the location of streets, buildings, hydrants and unusual hazards in their respective first due areas.
- Fire Captains maintain order and discipline in their command at all times.
- Fire Captains assist with planning, organizing, and controlling station objectives in accordance with all company philosophies, strategies, goals, objectives, principals and procedures
Communications
- Must conduct all radio communications in a professional, respectful manner.
Customer Service
- Conduct fire safety, fire extinguisher and prefire planning inspections.
- Provide information to the client, conduct station tours, and participate in public education standbys.
- Work requires cooperative/supportive interaction with coworkers, supervisors, doctors and other healthcare workers.
- Work requires interaction with representatives of other client departments and subcontractors, other fire departments and local, state and federal agencies.
Administrative
- The Fire Captain shall complete, review and forward all required Fire Station/Company reports.
- Responsible for completion of required administrative forms and station logs.
- The Fire Captain shall ensure that their station has all required manuals and maintains the station training library.
- Must have thorough knowledge of Fire SOG’s and administrative policies.
- Must have thorough knowledge of applicable collective bargaining agreements.
Training
- The Fire Captain ensures participation by his crew in all company required training events.
- The Fire Captain conducts in-service company training.
- The Fire Captain is responsible for the completion of all assigned Safety inspections and Pre Emergency Plans.
Supervision
- Fire Captains direct technical and functional supervision over firefighting staff and directly and indirectly supervise Firefighters, Fire Engineers, Fire Lieutenants and EMS personnel assigned to a specific fire station.
- Fire Captains delegate duties and responsibilities to subordinates.
- Ensure that apparatus, tools, equipment and quarters are maintained by crews daily.
- Ensure all required reports are completed daily.
- Communicate any required department orders, directives, memos, etc. promptly and consistently.
- Perform annual or biannual performance evaluations of assigned crew members and create and implement Performance Action Plans if necessary.
- Serve as a role model by consistently displaying exemplary leadership through action and example.
Compliance
- Reviews paperwork for accuracy and correct process.
- Implements corrective/preventive measures as determined by the Corporate Compliance/Audit Committee.
- Cooperates with Internal Audit, Compliance and HR on any recommendations and changes to compliance and legal workflow issues.
- Takes swift and immediate action in accordance with Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance on any areas of concern.
- Complies and enforces all policies and procedures.
- Has successfully completed all required Compliance Training within the required time period.
- Has had no compliance related corrective action during the current review period.
- Other duties may be assigned that are specific to the local operation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
Experience:
- Five years fulltime Firefighting experience with a minimum of one year as a supervisor.
Education:
- High School diploma or GED required.
Skills:
- Able to work any shift assigned, including nights, holidays and weekends.
- Available to work overtime as assigned and as needed on an emergency basis.
- Must meet local standards pertaining to qualifications, training and/or eligibility for hiring placement or promotion.
Credentials/Licenses:
- State issued or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (ProBoard) certifications as a minimum:
- NFPA 1001, Firefighter II and
- NFPA 472, Hazardous Materials Operations level certification
- NFPA 1002, Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator (Pumper)
- NFPA 1081, Industrial Fire Brigade Member (Interior or Exterior)
- NFPA 1006 – Rescue Technician (Confined Space & Rope Rescue Technicians)
- NFPA 472, Hazardous Materials Technician
- NFPA 1041, Fire Instructor I
- NPFA 1021, Fire Officer I
- State or National Registered as an EMTP or EMTB certification with current CPR/AED certification. If an EMT-P must have current ACLS certification.
- Valid driver license with good driving record in accordance with company policy.
