CEI Roadway Inspector

S&ME is currently seeking dedicated full-time CEI Roadway Inspectors to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team in Raleigh-Durham area, including Chapel Hill, Sanford, Benson, Smithfield, Goldsboro, Wake Forest, Louisburg, Henderson and surrounding areas.
As a CEI Inspector, you'll play a critical role in the oversight of significant transportation projects to ensure they are constructed in alignment with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Inspectors can reside anywhere within an hour of the project site and will have access to a company vehicle to report directly to the site.
Your Day-to-Day:
- Execute a range of inspection and oversight duties for transportation projects to confirm that contractors adhere to project specifications, contracts, and safety protocols.
- Monitor and evaluate various construction activities, including land clearing, earthwork, asphalt and concrete paving, structural bridge construction, underground pipe installation, traffic control setups, and application of pavement markings.
- Collect samples and conduct tests on construction materials to ensure they meet project quality and safety standards.
- Compile detailed daily reports that document inspection findings, project status, and contractor performance, while also processing contractor payment documentation.
- Perform precise calculations and maintain comprehensive records related to inspections, material quantities, and project timelines.
- Review the installation and maintenance of erosion control devices, ensuring compliance with environmental plans, regulations, and permits.
- Attend regular project progress and safety meetings, collaborating closely with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders to address any project issues or updates.
- Conduct surveys to verify compliance with Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) requirements, ensuring project inclusivity and fairness.
CEI Inspectors may encounter a variety of challenging work environments, including exposure to outdoor conditions, highway traffic, uneven terrain, and construction hazards involving heavy machinery. This role may also require extended hours, including weekends and holidays.
Compensation is based on experience, with additional bonuses for holding relevant certifications.
What You Bring:
- You have ONE of the following:
- High school diploma/GED required and 4 years of highway-related construction or inspection experience
- 2-year technical degree or higher in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology with 2 years of highway-related construction experience
- You have at least TWO of the following NCDOT-based certifications:
- NCDOT QMS Roadway Certification
- NCDOT Conventional Density Certification
- NCDOT Concrete Field Technician Certification
- NCDOT Erosion Control Level II
- NCDOT Nuclear Gauge Certification
- You have strong communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
- You have the ability to complete data entry into multiple software applications on a smart device
- You have good math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
