Position Summary:
The Naval Architect / Engineering Manager is a PLAYER/COACH. As a contributing member of the Engineering Team, they perform Engineering and Design tasks. As a Leader, they plan, organize, and direct design and engineering staff in all phases of assigned Marine engineering design projects to meet company objectives for design, new product development and improvement of existing product lines related to high performance aluminum hulled boat design and manufacturing. Supervises engineers, designers, and/or draftsmen based at the Tacoma facility, and works closely with Business Development, Sales, and Operations to ensure successful technical and financial completion of assigned design projects.

Responsibilities:
-
As a player/coach this role will be performing engineering work as well as leading the team.

Works with cross-functional teams to drive the delivery of high-quality products from design concept to customer delivery and in-service operation

Delegates assignments to team members and track key project activities to successful completion

As a participating member of the engineering department, they will perform more complex engineering tasks and support the team as a mentor and subject matter expert in problem solving

Leads cross-functional design review process to ensure product and systems designs meet customer requirements, project budgets, and quality standards

Supports the establishment of engineering department objectives and work plans including budgets and resource requirements in collaboration with Engineering Leadership.

Works closely with the Bremerton Engineering Manager to ensure engineering resources are flexing to meet the priorities and needs of the organization as a whole

Coordinates with corporate Engineering on implementation and changes to engineering policies, process, and procedures to ensure design projects meet technical requirements, and cost and schedule objectives.

Assigns and monitors work of external engineering resources and technical consulting firms in support of related design and development projects

Supervise and contributes to process/quality improvement teams and/or initiatives. Identifies and recommends improvements to designs, scheduling processes, practices or materials which lead to positive results in product quality.

Participate in the development of proposals for assigned programs to include detailed designs, analyses, drawings, and test data

Leads research and development of new product and platform offerings and leads product enhancement initiatives related to existing product designs

Provide support to the business development and sales team in preparation and delivery of quotes and technical responses in support customer requirements

Works closely with Program Management function in support of the project engineering team and manages conflicts within the different groups.

Provide technical support for manufacturing engineering to improve design to manufacturing process, and leads and maintains the product change control and configuration management processes
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent professional experience required.

Over 5 years of directly related experience; minimum of three years managing/supervising a team

Experience in the design and development of naval and/or marine platforms and systems.

Experience utilizing marine regulatory standards in boat design and development. Experience with High Speed Aluminum vessels preferred.

Experience implementing design-to-cost and design-for-manufacturing techniques and improvement practices.

Ability to evaluate, understand and interpret federal contracts and military specifications related to programs.

Ability to navigate and be successful operating in a dynamic smaller company environment

Strong technical ability and understanding of manufacturing systems, lean manufacturing principles, material flow systems

Strong organizational skills

Ability to creatively problem solve in a complex environment

Advanced computer skills, with a focus on Microsoft Office/Excel/Access (or other database software)

Proven success contributing to quality, safety, and continuous improvement

Ability to work effectively independently or on a team

Ability to work effectively and achieve success under pressure and within deadlines
