JOB SUMMARY: Provide effective and efficient oversight and management of the custodial activities at SVSU. This includes the planning, development, promotion of, and supervision of custodial operations staff and physical resources. Work to be primarily third shift and some weekends, although subject to change dependent upon University needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership, management and direction to departmental employees serving the campus community in custodial operations. Includes prioritizing, delegating, conducting performance reviews, meetings with individuals or groups within the department, and motivating superior performance.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to varying and unique situations. Assist with developing and implementing plans for continued understanding of campus needs and methods to foster good working relationships with members of the campus community.
  • Assist with developing strategic and long-term plans for custodial operations based on anticipated needs and changes in the department and university. Able to quickly modify procedures and plans based on unscheduled changes. Identify, recommend and implement best practices for custodial services.
  • Maintain open communications with department staff, other departments and the campus community in the spirit of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Provide effective communications in writing and orally to individuals or groups within custodial services and university stakeholders.
  • Assist with developing and implementing action plans designed to improve departmental efficiency, effectiveness, and operations in general. Continue assessments and process improvements on continuous basis.
  • Make decisions which require exercising good judgment and/or modification of the standard course of action to address the situation at hand, and for which only broad guidelines may be available.
  • Assist with developing and implementing custodial policies and procedures, including the training of staff and ongoing coaching as it applies to departmental and University policies and procedures.
  • Assist in developing and managing related budgets and statistical reports.
  • Purchase related supplies and equipment.
  • Resolve problems related to the custodial operation.
  • Conduct daily building inspections.
  • Assign and oversee special projects in addition to daily assignments.
  • Provide supervision and interaction with the custodial staff; including hiring, training, coaching, performance evaluations, discipline and recommendations for termination.
  • Maintain compliance with safety standards, policies & procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Supervision is received from the Assistant Director of Campus Facilities - Custodial Operations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Custodial staff, student employees, and may include outside contractors.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Administration or other related field or equivalent experience supervising or assisting with supervising operations and personnel within related field.
  • Two or more years of custodial/housekeeping management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high levels of customer service and improving operational efficiencies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan coordinates, analyze, and document specific administrative functions.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products and the ability to learn new technology.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends & 3rd shift.
  • Demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with diverse student populations and groups.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
Experience in a unionized, health care or university environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
