Responsibilities
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Life, the Director is the overall administrator of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which provides direct counseling and psychological services to full-time undergraduate and graduate students, including outreach, crisis intervention, training and consultation to faculty, staff and parents/families. The Director is responsible for developing the vision and direction for the services provided, being sensitive to the changing needs of students and a culturally diverse population. The Director facilitates the provision of the counseling and mental health needs of a diverse student population by engaging in the formal coordination with Student Life offices, academic departments, administrative units, and external community agencies.

The Director provides clinical services as well as offers clinical supervision and clinical training (individual, group, didactic seminars), working closely with department staff. The Director, in partnership with their staff, maintains a competitive, psychodynamic training program with rigorous annual searches for pre- and postdoctoral trainees.

The Division of Student Life intersects at multiple points of a student's journey at Saint Mary's. With areas that promote students' living experiences, wellness, and engagement, Student Life accompanies students on their academic and co-curricular journey at Saint Mary's. The Division of Student Life creates a sense of belonging, offers participatory opportunities, and encourages students to contribute back their talents. Departments within Student Life include Campus Assault, Response, and Education (CARE), Campus Housing, Club Sports, Community Life, Center for Women & Gender Equity, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Dean of Students, Intercultural Center, New Student & Family Programs, Public Safety & Transportation, Recreational Sports, Student Involvement and Leadership, and the Student Health Center.

Administration: Provide overall administration for the department, determining and planning for appropriate staffing. Provides overall management of department staff, including licensed psychologists, an administrative assistant, staff therapists, Master's-level practicum trainees, and postdoctoral residents. Recruits, screens, selects, trains, supervises and annually conducts performance evaluations of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff. Assists in the selection, screening, hiring, and clinical supervision of Master's level practicum trainees and postdoctoral residents.

Administers and determines expenditures of department resources, planning and prioritizing future budget and staffing allocation.

Manages data collection, statistics on program delivery, and evaluation of programs and services. Supervises clinical record keeping and ensures standard of care. Is responsible for and addresses all issues related to legal and ethical issues.

Informs campus of internal policy, protocols, and emergency procedures. Promotes and supports professional development activities of the staff.

Clinical Responsibilities: Provides personal counseling & psychological services to students including, but not limited to, intake interviews, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, and case management. Serves as primary referral for clinical staff on service matters as needed, especially those regarding threat of danger to self, others, or College property. Provides crisis response and incident debriefing, including, but not limited to, accident, fire, assault, suicide attempt, death of student or member of community.
Shares on-call responsibilities with clinical staff and responds to after-hours emergencies as needed. Manages and maintains a clinic caseload of approximately 12% of the student body annually. Coordinates assessment evaluation and referrals. Screens and updates referral sources and oversees requests for clinical records.

Wellness Relations: Represents department as part of divisional leadership team. In collaboration with department staff, initiates and communicates mental health needs of students to community through workshops, data evaluation, and partnerships. Articulates vision and functions of department to broader campus and external partners. Initiates and responds to faculty, staff, and family referrals and special need requests. Fosters close working relationship with departments from Student Life, Academic Affairs, Athletics and other campus colleagues. Develops and maintains preventative mental health programs. Serves on Outreach, Referral, and Behavior Intervention Team (ORBIT), Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT), and other, related campus committees.

Maintains a screened community referral network. Fosters strong relationships with off-campus mental health professionals.

Program Assessment and Management: Provides primary leadership in program design, development of policy and procedures consistent with College's Mission, Strategic Plan, and professional standards while being responsive to the diversity and changing needs of students. Encourages and facilitates the implementation of new programs to improve the scope and quality of services offered. Works closely with related professional organizations to determine assessment tools to capture demographics and student response to services compared to national benchmarks. Works closely with Student Life Leaders to ensure the advocacy of Student Life and College goals.

Academic Partnerships & Growth: Collaborate with campus partners to explore development of health sciences academic program at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Continue and foster partnership with graduate programs for trainee program. In partnership with divisional leadership, participate in exploratory work of external partners.

culturally diverse campus environment and develops effective relationships within the division of Student Life and with other areas of the College. Some weekend and evening hours required.

Experience and Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
REQUIRED: Advanced Degree in Clinical/Counseling Psychology, from an APA accredited graduate program
PREFERRED: Ph.D. or Psy.D in Clinical/Counseling Psychology

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): Minimum of three years college/university counseling experience and four years supervisory experience, with preferred experience as Director; demonstrated administration, organization and systems skills. Budget management at college/university level; demonstrated knowledge of college counseling models, programs, and trends. Knowledge and practice of brief individual Time Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy (TLDP), group counseling and psychotherapy, demonstrated skills and commitment to training and supervision. Experience with students from diverse backgrounds and lens for student equity; leadership in policy formulation; critical incident response; program development. Demonstrated ability to actively collaborate across communities including faculty, staff, and students in responding to student and campus needs.

Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical) Effective interaction with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and families. Special skill in college campus mental health concerns including eating disorder, sexual assault, trauma and loss, alcohol/drug abuse and addiction assessment and treatment. Requires knowledge of legal issues and responsibility for the profession with evidence of an understanding of and adherence to best standards of care. Spanish-speaking appropriate for a clinical setting.
