Position Summary

Responsible for coordinating the athletic program in a middle school.


Reporting Relationship

Report to the Middle School Principal.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, two years of coaching experience and must possess a valid Minnesota teaching license issued by the Minnesota Department of Education.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the goals and objectives of public education.

Knowledge of the development and maintenance of a high school level sports program.

Knowledge of sports rules and procedures.

Knowledge of trends pertaining to sports and physical education instructional processes.

Knowledge of coaching and motivational techniques and techniques for managing behavior in sometimes highly charged situations.

Skill in assessing and evaluating the potential of students and encouraging them to perform at their highest level.

Skill in coordinating the work of others and providing day-to-day work guidance.

Ability to coach a variety of sports.

Ability to interactive effectively with a wide variety of students and other people representing diverse cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including the media, the public, parents, other district staff, sports representatives from other organizations and other agencies as appropriate.

Ability to assess sports program needs and make recommendations to administration for improvements.

Ability to establish and administer a sports program budget.


Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:

Monitor the conduct of the athletic teams at a middle school.

Assist the principal in the assessment of the coaching staff after each season.

Promote harmony and good conduct among the coaching staff.

Ensure that athletes meet the following criteria, in conjunction with the coaches:

  • That all athletes meet the requirements in regards to physical examinations.
  • That all athletes have secured permission to participate from their parent/guardian.
  • That all athletes have paid the equipment and materials fee before equipment and supplies are issued.


Attend or designate a representative to be present at all times when the school hosts an athletic event.

Ensure that an eligibility list is prepared and submitted to the Minnesota State High School League.

Negotiate all non-conference game contracts and agreements involving athletics.

Coordinate the dissemination of all materials and information pertinent to the sound promotion of athletics; publicize athletic events in the school.


Inform coaches and players of the rules and regulations of the Minnesota State High School League.

Prepare the school's athletic budget; administer athletic funds; purchase and ensure the proper care of equipment and supplies.

Prepare reports relating to the school's athletic program as required or requested by administration.

Maintain records of letter and award winners in all sports and work to promote standardization of awards on a city-wide basis.

Schedule facilities for games and practice as necessary.

Arrange for band and marching units to perform at athletic events and be responsible for the conduct of cheerleaders and marching units at such events.

Meet or designate another staff member to meet the visiting team's bus, direct the team to the appropriate locker room, provide any necessary information and accompany the visiting team back to their bus after the event.

Act as liaison between the middle school and senior high schools in matters pertaining to athletics.

Contribute to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
