Job Summary

Afterschool Program Associates work directly with youth from diverse backgrounds, to provide a safe, responsible, well-supervised afterschool program while acting as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor

The Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism.

By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our student’s interests and areas of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community.

Program Associates work at the partner site for 10-20 hours per week, receiving a schedule from the partner about which students will benefit most from consistent motivation and support.

During their time at the partner site, program associates will build a mentoring relationship with the students and share their passion for reading and education.

In this program, the program associate will get direct experience working with students, practicing customer service skills, learning about the education system, and working in a fast-paced environment.

This is a community work-study position (more info can be found below). Community work-study should not be your primary source of income, but to help with supplemental expenses only.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Specific tasks vary by partner site, but in general, Program Associates will perform the following duties :

  • Attend an orientation session about the expectations of an America Reads Program Associate.
  • Develop, teach, and adapt short lesson plans for children at the partner site.
  • Review training m

  • Serve as a mentor and positive role model to younger students.
  • Assist students with homework.
  • Engage students in learning and literacy enrichment activities.
  • Deliver developmentally appropriate activities (academics and enrichment) that address grant objectives and goals for youth participating in the program
  • Become familiar with, select prepared, write new, and implement hands-on and project-based lesson plans.
  • Lead and supervise groups of youth and address behavior issues when they arise
  • Assist PSSL Assistant Coordinator in reporting requirements : Collect accurate attendance and activity participation of youthCommunicate successes, and challenges regarding youth to direct supervisorsConduct pre- and post-surveys according to grant requirements

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued

  • Maintain excellent communication with the Community Work Study Coordinator and the partner site.
  • Reflect on their experience through trainings, completing an ePortfolio, and written prompts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC’s Financial Aid office.
  • Must be able to earn a Work Study award.
  • Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester
  • Must work at least 10 hours and no more than 20 a week during the semester
  • Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Program Associates may create their own work schedules within available hours at their school sites.
  • Must commit to attending an orientation and team meetings at the outset.
  • Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred transportation method.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with elementary aged students.

  • Ability to read, write and speak well in English, bilingual skills a plus!
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Desire to work with elementary age students from diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
