Under general supervision a corrections officer is responsible for performing a variety of tasks relating to the intake, supervision and release of suspects/prisoners held for the Community Court.  This Job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.
 
Essential Functions:  (Essential functions, may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics.  This list of tasks ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification).Tasks: 
1.  Responsible for the enforcement of policy, procedure, rules, regulations, codes, statutes and laws pertaining to the lawful confinement of individuals remanded by the Community Court.  

2.  Performs a variety of technical activities involved in the booking and release of arrestees, including fingerprinting, photographing, inventorying/ storing/documenting/returning personal property, and completing required forms and questionnaires.  

3.  Conducts escorts/transports of detainees to and from court, scheduled appointments, work details and programs both within and outside of the facility as directed and needed while complying with established policy, procedure and safety measures.

4.  Monitors all detainee activity in the facility to detect and ensure facility safety and security, the safety of detainees in custody, and monitoring adherence to established rules, regulations, and guidelines.

5.  Demonstrates the ability to physically train and remain proficient in a variety of use of force techniques to include restraint use, Taser, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), defensive tactics or other methods as deemed appropriate and relevant by the department.

6.  Basic proficiency in standard computer applications to include Word, Outlook and Excel. Ability to learn and effectively utilize various technical equipment and applications to include computerized inmate management system, electronic fingerprint machine, intoxilyzers, glucose meters, etc.

7.  Monitors and/or conducts a variety of routine cleaning and maintenance details, which may include but is not limited to sweeping/mopping floors, cleaning refrigerators/microwaves, laundry details, emptying garbage, cleaning restrooms, officer stations, locker rooms, break rooms, etc..

8.  Distributes/administers prescribed and over the counter medications to prisoners in compliance with medical instructions/procedures.

9.  Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with staff, detainees, and the public at large.

10.  Performs other job related duties, as assigned, that enhance and facilitate program operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of correctional facility operating rules, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of detainee escort practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of general criminal justice identification techniques, including fingerprinting and photography.

  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in checking a variety of forms, agreements and court orders for accuracy, discrepancies and errors.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department staff, other law enforcement agency staff, and the public.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, guidelines, and policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and understand a variety of rules, regulations, and policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform a variety of technical law enforcement activities, to include monitoring cameras, intercoms, electronic doors, capturing electronic fingerprints, and effectively utilizing body worn cameras and radios.
  • Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, successfully pass thorough background investigation.
  • Equivalency:  Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filing the position. 

 

  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill
  • The Salt River Department of Corrections utilizes the State of Arizona Corrections Officer Training Academy (COTA) for corrections officer certification located in Tucson, Arizona.  Upon hire, non-certified applicants will be scheduled to attend the COTA.  Academy. Academic and physical fitness requirements must be completed to receive corrections officer certification and to obtain permanent status employment.   
 
  • Lateral applicants who have current COTA corrections officer certification must submit a copy of certificate with the SRPMIC general application.        Lateral applicants that do not have COTA certification must have completed an academy that is equivalent and provide documentation to be approved by the SRDOC Director of Corrections. 
 
  • All uniformed corrections staff will be certified in the following or its equivalent:  RedMan© Defensive Tactics, Taser X26 and Oleoresin Capsicum spray (this list is illustrative only and is not meant to be all inclusive).  You must have the ability to participate and complete these training programs and receive an exposure from the Taser X26 and Oleoresin Capsicum spray.  Training will be conducted by SRDOC certified trainers. 
 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License 

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
