Job DescriptionProject Name: San Francisco Conservation Corp Horticultural Training Program
Position Description:Under direction of the Operations Manager, the Park Section Supervisor supervises staff involved in the care and maintenance of grounds and natural areas, recreational and park facilities and other assigned landscaped and planted areas of City-owned property.The candidate will provide oversight & supervision toSF Conservation Corp(SFCC)'s field crew supervisors and crew members participating in the San Francisco School Distrcit (SFSD) Horticultural Training Program, a joint program of SFPUC, the San Francisco Sheriff's Office (SFSO) and the SF Conservation Corp (SFCC).
Work Location: San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's City Distribution Division (CDD), located at 1990 Newcomb Avenue in San Francisco
Work Hours: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform seasonal outdoor work consisting of weeding, hand pruning, manual exotics control, dead heading of Agapanthus, brush clearing and removal, debris removal, clear roofs of reservoirs, watershed clean-up services and as needed litter pick up.
Supervise subordinates and community volunteers in the maintenance and care of parks, easements and center islands, other planted and landscaped areas including large interior landscaping installations or recreational areas or natural areas.
Inspect subordinates and community volunteers work in planting, potting, transplanting and propagation of trees, shrubs and other nursery stock.
Ensures safe work practices by directing staff to wear protective equipment, conducting accident investigations, instructing in the proper use of tools, equipment and Integrated Pest Management; provides information on employee and public safety related to structural repairs, tree hazards and other unsafe conditions.
Ensure that the assigned field supervision staff is qualified, will take direction from the existing SFPUC staff to coordinate supervision of the year-round young adults, summer interns, and/or employees in performing grounds maintenance activities.
Prepare records and required reports, plan and submit work sites schedules for approval, and makes public contact in person or in writing while exercising independent judgement.
Assist in native plant vegetation at the various San Francisco reservoir sites, and within the right of ways owned by the SFPUC.
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the SFSD & SFPUC & SFCC staff.
Attend required quarterly status meetings with the SFSD & SFPUC & SFCC staff.
Class 3422 Park Section Supervisor performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications1. Three years of verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and controlling pests in the following areas: sports and athletic natural turf fields, golf courses, parks, ornamental gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens and/or public landscaped areas and six (6) months of experience as a supervisor; OR
2. Possession of a Certificate of Achievement from an accredited college or university in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, nursery and garden center operation, commercial cut flower and greenhouse production or related field and two years of verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and controlling pests in the following areas: sports and athletic natural turf fields, golf courses, parks, ornamental gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens and/or public landscaped areas; and six (6) months of experience as a supervisor; OR
3. Possession of an Associate of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or university in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, nursery and garden center operation, commercial cut flower and greenhouse production or related field and 18 months of verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and controlling pests in the following areas: sports and athletic natural turf fields, golf courses, parks, ornamental gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens and/or public landscaped areas; and six (6) months of experience as a supervisor; OR
4. Completion of the City and County of San Francisco's gardener apprenticeship program (4000 hours) and six (6) months of experience as a supervisor.
SUBSTITUTION: Two (2) years additional qualifying experience may substitute for the six (6) months supervisory experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
Some positions may require a Qualified Applicator Certificate in the following pest control categories: (A) Residential, Industrial, and Institutional, (B) Landscape Maintenance, (C) Right-of-Way, (E) Forest, and (F) Aquatic.
Some positions may require an Agricultural Pest Control Advisor License: in the following pest control categories: (A) Insects, Mites and Other Invertebrates (Plant), (B) Plant Pathogens (C) Nematodes (D) Vertebrate Pests, (E) Weed Control; and (G) Plant Growth Regulators
