What are the responsibilities and job description for the RN-PICC position at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital?
POSITION SUMMARY:
Coordinates/Provides nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient care team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.
The primary patients provided care at SGMH are adults and geriatric patients. The PICC Nurse must be competent in the assessment of adult/senior patients for appropriate behavior, motor skills and psychological norms. He/she must be knowledgeable in recognizing signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect, and cognizant of safety issues, both environmental and medical. Pediatric patients are occasionally admitted, therefore, the PICC nurse must also be competent in the assessment and care of children, including age-appropriate behavior, motor skills, and physiological/psychological developmental norms. He/she must be cognizant of safety, treatment/medication and immunization concerns of this age group as well as adults.
The PICC RN provides PICC line placement, infusion education and leadership in the PICC program under general supervision. In addition:
Ø Consults on special patient cases where a need for PICC Line Placement and instruction has been identified. Establishes a treatment plan for patients and their families to follow.
Ø Serves as a resource person for medical and hospital staff regarding PICC placement and education.
Ø Consults with healthcare team on complication management.
Ø Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients.
Ø Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments; notes all changes in physician order on assigned patients.
Ø Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients as well as the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary.
Ø Interacts with family and patient regarding care plan while in the hospital and at time of discharge.
Ø Informs patient and family of hospital procedures.
Ø Makes referral regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
Ø Delegates tasks to support staff.
Ø May recommend, develop and/or implement quality improvement in vascular access.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate from a school of nursing with diploma, associate degree, or BSN. California RN Licensure. 2 years of IR or PICC insertion experience. Maintains PICC certification of completion from a state approved educational provider for PICC theoretical course. Maintains yearly PICC competency. Ability to work independently and possess strong communication and teaching skills. Continues ongoing education and improves knowledge level related to vascular access and current trends in infusion therapy
