The role of the District English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructional Coach is to improve English language learner success. The coach primarily supports teachers and students through a modeling, co-teaching, observation and feedback, coaching model, using research-based second language acquisition strategies. The coach evaluates resources that support student learning, provides professional development relevant to language development for teachers and administrators, and provides feedback to teachers, students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and district goals. The District ESL Instructional Coach analyzes state and district data to measure student progress and provide targeted support to teachers, to analyze curriculum, and to lead instructional changes to improve student learning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Valid Texas teaching certificate, including ESL Supplemental, and a minimum of three years of effective teaching experience. Teaching experience in ESL 6-12 preferred. Master’s degree from accredited university in educational administration, content area, or curriculum and instruction preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of curriculum design and implementation
Must possess an in-depth knowledge of ESL programs, curriculum and instructional best practices.
Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and the ability to guide and develop teachers.
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, administrators, community members, students and others.
Ability to effectively model best instructional practices in classrooms with students
Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
Ability to effectively collaborate with teachers and principals
Ability to design and deliver professional development to adult learners
Ability to effectively facilitate coaching conversations
Ability to interpret and use data to design high quality lessons and other instructional activities
Demonstrate initiative and innovation in the work environment
Understand the needs of adult learners
Understand continuous improvement, and ability to facilitate goal setting
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Three years teaching experience in content area assigned or certification in content area.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Identify and support teachers in the implementation of instructional strategies and methodologies.
Support teaching practices and student learning.
Balance the continuum of coaching interactions (consulting, collaborating, coaching).
Work cooperatively with district and campus administrators in developing and coaching staff on instructional programs.
Plan and provide staff development for teachers, administrators and staff.
Collaborate and assist teachers in reflecting on lesson design, instructional techniques, and integration of technology.
Coordinate and implement internal and external labs (peer observation systems) as professional development models.
Engage in current research, provide school and district-wide professional learning, and disseminate information and other significant educational developments on the state and national levels regarding best practices.
Observe classroom learners to improve learning.
Present information and professional learning accurately and clearly, in alignment with district expectations.
Act as a strong advocate for student learning by supporting and communicating school and district initiatives.
Assist the district administrative team in establishing a calendar for professional learning.
Regular attendance; must be willing and able to report to work at designated sites on a regular daily basis according to established work schedule.
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
Comply with all policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, district and campus routines and regulations.
Communicate coaching visits with campus leadership team to provide data on teacher and campus needs.
Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
