What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Engineering and Systems Integration Implementation Professional to work with international and domestic partners to develop systems to protect radiological and nuclear materials. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to provide leadership in identifying issues and creating, validating, communicating, and implementing innovative strategies to accomplish a broad range of programmatic goals in collaboration with sponsors and partners.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Integrate with law enforcement, military, and first responders, specifically to protect mobile source materials. This requires a strong background in commercial vehicle regulations and requirements for the transportation of radioactive materials.

  • Support radiological response programs that include national- and site-level response force, tabletop exercises, alarm response, regulations development and radioactive shipment requirements and regulations.

  • Design physical protection and security systems, as well as conduct vulnerability analyses and acceptance testing.

  • Collaborate with internal business partners, including proposals, instructional system design, business processes, and write technical writings.

  • Develop and apply program management skills to evaluate and report status of cost, schedule and performance to management and customers; provide frequent presentations and written reports to a variety of audiences.

    The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's degree in science or engineering field, plus one (1) or more years of directly related experience; Or Bachelor's degree as stated above, plus five (5) years of experience.

  • Experience in the following:

  • Response program security for radiation detection, mobile sources and/or facilities

  • Law Enforcement and/or Military Security.

  • Program or project leadership.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience implementing the Office of Radiological Security (ORS) response integration program.

  • Familiarity with NNSA's Global Material Security programs, content, approach, and priorities.

  • Formal project management training or equivalent experience in managing projects that include the implementation of instructional system design related to response training programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and to work in a very fast paced, changing environment.

  • Ability to assist in writing funding proposals and engage with sponsor on opportunities, technology needs and training gaps.

  • Demonstrated versatility, political savvy, and high tolerance for ambiguity.

  • Knowledge of nuclear and radioactive materials and their applications.

  • Experience implementing a systematic approach to training to foster sustainability.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on multi-disciplinary teams and within the DOE Complex to deliver results.

  • Ability and willingness to frequently travel domestically and internationally.

About Our Team:

We are a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and technical specialists that enables and enhances physical and cyber security systems to protect and/or detect and recover nuclear and radiological materials around the world. We collaborate with many other organizations to leverage technologies and resources for multiple programs and are an integral capability of 6810, Global Engineered Security Systems. Department 6814 develops and nurtures Systems Analysis, Research and Development, Capacity Building and Response capabilities, in the nuclear and radiological materials security context.

Our Response team engages law enforcement agencies at local, state, and national levels domestically and internationally, providing information and equipment to train their forces how best to respond to attempted theft, sabotage and recovery of radioactive and nuclear materials.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
