What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Navigator position at Sano Orthopedics?
POSITION SUMMARY
The Clinical Navigator-Physician-Specific (CN) is responsible for assisting the physician in patient treatment issues, providing direct patient care, and maintaining proper standards of quality and integrity. The CN will serve as an extension of the physician (varying in specialties such as pain management, vascular, etc.) performing clinical duties while acquiring supplementary knowledge of the medical field and helping to make the workplace an efficient and effective environment for all. The CN will guide a patient through their healing journey at Sano Orthopedics.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
- Optimize and nurture the patient experience
- Navigate patients through their visits
- Provide Pre-Operative education and Post-Operative care for patients

Perform appropriate patient care duties when patient is in the clinic, including but not limited to:
- Room patients
- Schedule follow ups
- Prepare and record charts appropriately within the EMR
- Employ skill in patient care and communication
- Assist with preparing and administering injections
- Prepare for and assist physician with minor procedures
- Communicate with external healthcare providers (Physician, PA, NP, ATs, PTs, OTs, RNs) on patient status
- Prepare and assist patient with needed paperwork (e.g. work status form)
- Home exercise program development and instruction
- Patient education
- Call in patient prescriptions as directed
- Utilize company Inventory Management System
- Assist physician with EMR functions required for proper documentation and capturing appropriate data
- Coordinate MRI and surgery referrals as needed
- Schedule surgeries as needed
- Print images as needed
- Monitor patient and staff communication daily (Klara/TEAMS)
- Complete Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Short-Term Disability (STD) paperwork
- Report MRI and lab results to patients as directed by physician
- Obtain prior approval from insurance companies on prescriptions, injections, or procedures as needed
- Serve as preceptor and educational mentor for students and residents
- Facilitate the front office as needed
- Help manage physicians day-to-day schedule
- Help answer patient communication when not in clinic
- Attend mandatory full staff and clinical meetings and acknowledges receipt of and reviews minutes if absent
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Engage primary care offices, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other referral sources in an effort to increase awareness in the community
- Enhance the experience of referring providers
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned
SKILLS
- Understanding of Internal Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Common Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding
- Proficient knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy
- Strong customer service skills
- EMR experience (eClinical Works preferred)
- Highly detailed and accurate, with excellent organizational skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; expresses thoughts and ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing; establishes trust and confidence quickly
- Excellent skills in Microsoft Office (primarily Word, Excel, PowerPoint and TEAMS).
- Must be computer literate with the ability to learn new software applications

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Athletic Training or equivalent from a CAATE accredited program is preferred; Licensed Practical Nurse or Medical Assistant with 2 years of clinical experience (Orthopedic preferred) will be considered.
- State Licensed (or eligible for License in MO and KS) if applicable
- Certified Athletic Trainer through the Board of Certification, Inc. (ATC) or applicable accrediting body
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, preferred.
