Position Overview:

The Global Project Manager (GPM) is a senior member of a high-profile project team of strategic importance to Sanofi, plays the role of “Chief Operating Officer” of the project, articulating strategy and execution. The project (s) can be in any stage of drug development; from M2 to Submission/Approval/Launch.

  • The GPM articulates activities across core team members, develops scenario alternatives, identifies risks and mitigation plans, and manages variances in timings, resources and budget and ensures project quality.

  • The GPM is accountable for the translation of the strategy into a robust and realistic project plan. o Works with Project Planning Manager (PPM) to establish a realistic but competitive Optime (tracking tool) plan, identify critical path activities and coordinate integration of resources, development cost provided by functions and platforms.

  • The GPM leads the risk management process encompassing proactive risk identification, quantification (probability and impact), risk strategy definition and mitigation plans.

  • Leads risk assessment exercise at project level, ranking risks identified by Project Team Members (PTMs), coordinates elaboration of mitigation plan and development of scenario with operational team.

  • The GPM closely works with the GPH for project reporting and timely alerts.

  • Monthly update of Binder, Highlights, and KPI and project alerts and contributes actively to Early & Late Development dashboards and China dashboard as needed.

  • The GPM must be sufficiently experienced in Project Management and with the project to be able to stand in for the GPH if and when needed both at the team and global R&D level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifies issues to be raised with Global Project Head and proposes solutions and mitigation plans.

  • Acts as key interlocutor between different functional interfaces: between sub-teams, team members and other parts of the organization.

  • Communicates project vision as needed and establishes trust within the project team and functional departments.

  • Ensures communication from global project team to all stakeholders, including regions, functions and platforms as needed. This includes project reports and timely alerts.

  • Ensures execution of functional plans.

  • Monitors sub-teams to drive execution of plans against strategy in alignment with functional planners and monitors milestones in alignment with strategy.

  • Establishes relevant project key performance indicators (KPIs) and proactively identifies proposals to achieve them.

  • Identifies resource needs with core team members and requests resources required for the project and ensures that resources are assigned and aligned to deliver on project plans.

  • Manages stakeholders by ensuring communication to departmental management on issues related to their deliverables and/or responsibilities.

  • Actively contributes to the creation of presentations to senior management committees in partnership with GPH and others as appropriate.

  • Leads all relevant project documentation such as Integrated Development Plans (IDPs), budget proposals and centralized project dashboards in partnership with units and platforms and other planning actors.

  • (Co-) leads project team meetings in alignment with GPH.

  • Supports and/or leads sub-team meetings as appropriate case-by-case.

  • Management and coaching of PMs assigned to the project.

Accountabilities:

  • The GPM works in close alignment with the GPH to recommend strategic and operational plans to senior management committees.

  • The GPM is accountable for the creation and execution of the operational plan in line with product strategy, Influences strategy by collecting and providing insights in feasibility, competition, and strategic plan.

  • The GPM is accountable to ensure execution of functional plans. Monitors sub-teams to drive execution of plans against strategy in alignment with functional planners and monitors milestones in alignment with strategy.

  • Budgets: The GPM will manage the project budget together with the project controller and provide appropriate alerts and relevant solutions to the GPH regarding variances.

  • Documents coordination: IDP including PFV (budget integration), Slide deck for decision committee, CIB update and Monthly reports (Binder, Highlights, key project performance metrics, alert, dashboards as needed).

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven leadership, capacity to coordinate several activities and stakeholders including external partners, if relevant.

  • Expertise in managing large and complex projects and in managing global, multicultural development teams.

  • Knowledge of drug development and regulatory processes from discovery to global product launch including Medical Affairs and ability to drive regulatory and labeling strategies, previous contribution to submissions and knowledge of external landscape and competitor field.

  • Ability to network and communicate across diverse functions, and to work in a matrix organization.

  • Critical thinking – ability to challenge the status quo.

  • Anticipate risks and propose mitigation plans, ability to propose creative solutions to operational/strategic issues.

  • Ability to propose strategies for asset optimization (Life Cycle Management).

  • Ability to manage/coach a small group of PMs within a project.

  • Influencing skills to motivate team members for best performance and outcomes.

  • Excellent communication skills – written and oral.

  • Fluent in English.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in a scientific discipline (e.g. BS, MS, PhD, MD, DVM) or related degree with substantial project management and / or project leadership experience.

  • Business qualifications such as MBA or professional project management qualification such as PMP® would be of additional benefit.

  • 10 years of experience in expanding roles in development or related field including experience and understanding of the current pharmaceutical environment including sound understanding of the therapeutic area.

  • 5 years professional experience on managing complex projects, including experience on a late stage development product; skills for bridging between different fields of expertise and demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary global teams would be of additional benefit.

  • Strong expertise in drug development and risk management (including scenario and contingency plans) would be of benefit

  • In-depth knowledge of project planning tools, budget structure and management science would be of benefit.

  • Transversal communication and networking demonstrated. Managerial and interpersonal skills applied to matrix org.
