Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students (AVP/DOS)

Santa Clara University seeks an experienced and innovative leader who will work as a division and campus collaborative partner to enhance/expand the University's commitment to student success. This new position focuses on the institution's commitment to providing transformational student experiences that meet the needs of an ever- changing student body. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Life, the AVP/DOS will lead efforts to create and sustain high quality, impactful and data driven programs to foster a vibrant student experience, modeling a commitment to a student-centered culture with a focus on the holistic wellbeing of students. Together with unit leaders, the AVP/DOS will strengthen, expand and leverage existing programs to create and foster a safe, healthy and supportive campus environment.

A.POSITION PURPOSE

The AVP/DOS serves as a senior member of the Vice Provost's leadership team and a collaborative partner to campus colleagues to develop and implement programs and services designed to advance SCU's fundamental values, in particular its commitment to students. The AVP/DOS is a strategic leader and is responsible for framing, identifying, providing resources for, and leading discussions and initiatives relating to student life and campus culture; infusing the University commitment to cura personalis into University programs and policies that shape student life; and providing leadership, management, and oversight to those directly supervised.

The AVP/DOS provides leadership, oversight, vision, and direction to the following units and initiatives: Student Conduct and Community Standards, Residence Life, Campus Climate, Student Well-being, Off Campus Student Life and support for Basic Needs. Actions and decisions of the AVP/DOS directly impact the long-term success of both the student experience and the organization.

B.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Leadership

Serve as a strategic partner with the Vice Provost in advancing the University's commitment to provide student-centered, integrated learning opportunities and is routinely consulted. Seek opportunities to advance the mission, vision, community values, and strategic initiatives of the Division of Student Life and Santa Clara University through active, engaged participation in campus visioning, planning and assessment efforts. Lead initiatives, programs, and services that create and sustain a culture of wellbeing on an organizational level throughout the SCU community. Assumes responsibility for the success and evolution of the department and ensures staff collaboration with peers and constituencies. Create and sustain student engagement opportunities that promote the University's commitment to justice, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Lead Santa Clara's efforts to address students' basic needs including but not limited to food, housing and technology. Collaborate with faculty and staff in developing and implementing programs designed to advance the Division's and University's commitment to providing transformative student experiences that meet the needs of an ever- changing student body.

Campus and Division Engagement Serve as the chief student conduct officer and final appeal authority for student conduct cases that may result in suspension and expulsion. Serve on the on-call crisis management team for all student-related issues, consulting regularly with Campus Safety Services, Emergency Management and other campus leaders and on-call personnel. Serve as Division of Student Life representative on university committees, as appropriate to the role. Build, maintain, and strengthen relationships, including but not limited to colleagues within the Division of Student Life, across campus(es) and with constituency groups. Participate in division-wide assessment efforts to track progress on goals and student learning outcomes. Maintain abreast with higher education issues and effective student development practices related to state and federal regulations, compliance and legal issues. Serves as the Vice Provost's designee, when needed.

Student and Family Engagement Maintain a strong, visible and positive presence on campus through active participation in social and educational activities, recreational/athletic and ceremonial events. Meet regularly with student leaders and student organizations to gain understanding of student concerns and respond appropriately. Interact effectively with parents and guardians of students as appropriate and in support of student success and retention.

Staff Management and Development Recruit, train, develop and manage staff appropriate to the roles. Effectively manage the changing workflow of staff reporting through the AVOP/DOS clarifying expectations as needed. Provide leadership, oversight, direction, consultation, teambuilding and support to those directly supervised. Provide performance evaluation of those directly supervised according to University standards and policies. During the employee annual performance evaluation, each supervisor will review and discuss with each of their employees what they have learned about DEI that year, and how they have either applied their learning to their work or how they plan to do so in the near future. Encourage and support ongoing training and development opportunities including mentoring coaching and career development.

Department Management Oversee the assignment and management of annual budget allocations, ensuring that budget decisions align with unit priorities and the Division's strategic initiatives, as may be required, participate in fundraising related to areas of responsibility. In consultation with the Vice Provost and appropriate collaborative governance processes, evaluate and update policies that reflect the current needs/culture of the campus community. Create new tools, processes, and procedures to improve effective information flow and collaboration. Responsible for policy interpretation and its implementation that pertain to student well-being. Provide leadership and consultation in responding to student needs and campus issues related to student life. Initiate, coordinate, and implement policies for the department that are effective, efficient, and conducive to the personal, social, physical, spiritual, cultural development and general well-being of students. Respond as appropriate to local, state, and federal policy changes impacting the area of responsibilities. Stay abreast and effectively communicate applicable changes and updates in state and federal policies and regulations.

D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

All professional staff members of the Division of Student Life are expected to engage yearly in at least one DEI professional development experience, which will be documented as a part of each employee's annual performance evaluation. Recommend initiatives and implement changes to improve quality and services. Identify and determine cause of problems; develop and present recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices. Maximize productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.

Demonstrated experience in student conduct policy administration, Title IX, and the application of restorative justice practices in resolving student conflicts and disputes. Evidence of commitment to and promotion of creating a healthy and inclusive climate, characterized by civil discourse and respect for diverse experiences. Demonstrated proficiency in management and supervision: ability to lead, manage, mentor, assess and evaluate the performance of professional staff; Demonstrated commitment to staff diversity and staff development. Demonstrated understanding student services planning, knowledge, and management. Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations and quickly implement an appropriate course of action.

Education and Preferred Qualifications

Education

Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or another relevant field. More than 15 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in student affairs or related work in a university setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of student development theory and practice and its application to contemporary higher education experiences Demonstrated commitment to remaining abreast of emerging trends related to student engagement and success. Experience with benchmarking and assessment of programs and initiatives. Engagement in higher education professional organizations.

Considerable time is spent at a desk using a computer terminal. May be required to travel to other buildings on the campus.
