The salary range is based on the compensation structure outlined in the end of term schedule of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).Class Purpose: Under general supervision, Public Safety Dispatcher I’s perform the full range of radio-telephone operational duties in dispatching public safety personnel and equipment. This is the journey level class in the Public Safety Dispatcher series. Distinguishing Characteristics: Public Safety Dispatchers receive routine and emergency calls and transmit messages via communications systems consisting of radio, 9-1-1 emergency telephone lines and data terminals which operate on a seven day, 24-hour basis. Incumbents report to an Operations Supervisor, who is responsible for supervising, directing, assigning and evaluating the work of dispatch employees on an assigned shift.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Typical Tasks: Transmits and receives messages to and from User Agencies via public safety radios, 9-1-1 emergency telephone lines, data terminals, and other communications equipmentMonitors and maintains status of assigned public safety personnel and equipment; may initiate actions to ensure adequate area-wide protection.Analyzes situations accurately and takes effective action to help assure field safety.Receives reports of situations which may result in, or have resulted in, various types of emergencies and coordinates the dispatching of emergency vehicles and public safety personnel.Reads and utilizes computer codes, formats and displays.Inquires, interprets, verifies, receives and disseminates information from national, state and local law enforcement computer networks.Maintains records and prepares reports of calls received and actions taken as necessary.Provides backup to other dispatchers as necessary.

Online Dispatcher CritiCall Exam: (Pass/Fail) – PSD candidates must have passed the Dispatcher CritiCall Examination proctored by Santa Cruz Regional 9-1-1 for further consideration. Candidates will receive a link with testing information after application screening. CritiCall examination may test your ability to: Follow rules and directions.Make decisions quickly and accurately based on rules you are provided.Enter data or information (such as names, telephone numbers, license plate sequences, etc.) into a computer using a keyboard.Hear, comprehend, summarize, and/or answer questions about information provided verbally in short story form.Use written information provided on lists (such as an alphabetically sequenced telephone book).Recognize if bits of information, such as addresses or names, are similar or different.Quickly learn and later recognize information that is shown in writing, such as descriptions (e.g., red car, blue boat, green shirt).Perform basic arithmetic (such as addition, subtraction, percentages) without a calculator or other tools.Hear and remember pieces of information, such as telephone numbers or license plate numbers, for a short period of time.Evaluate information provided in order to prioritize or categorize incidents.Evaluate information and identify the most correct solution based upon that information.Correctly spell commonly used words which sound alike that might delay emergency assistance if misspelled (e.g., patience instead of patients).Communicate using sentences or phrases that clearly express the intended meaning.Read and comprehend written passages. Safari users will have to follow the onscreen instructions after clicking the test link for enabling the auto-play function within the Safari browser. Please note, Microsoft is no longer supporting Internet Explorer thus the exam may not be compatible with Internet Explorer Browse. For Apple users, the Safari browser defaults the Media Auto-Play settings to "off", which prevents sound in certain modules from playing. The setting is easily changed to allow for Auto-Play. Please make sure you check these settings prior to beginning your exam. This exam contains several audio components. Computer speakers and/or headphones will be required. If you have not used the testing system previously, you may be prompted to download a browser plug-in. Please do so in order to take the exam from your computer.These instructions will be provided again in the testing link.3. Sit-Along: Applicants observe Dispatch center floor operations to understand the job better. This will be your first impression on the agency. Be prepared to ask and answer questions about the job. 4. Submit a personal history statement: 5. Eligibility: Candidates who meet the minimum qualification standards, pass the CritiCall examination, and sit-along review will be moved forward to establish an eligibility list. 6. Peer Review Panel: Candidates at the top of the eligibility list will be invited to a peer review panel; a panel interview with a group of peers consisting of dispatchers, call-takers, and lead dispatchers. If the candidate indicates a bilingual status, the bilingual assessment will be done before or after the peer review.7. Conditional Offer: Applicants may progress through the recruitment process upon available authorized positions and successfully passing the preceding steps.8. Background Process: If considered for appointment, candidates must consent to a background check, including a criminal history check, fingerprinting, psychological test, and medical exam. 9.
