What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Residential Camp Counselor position at SARAH HEINZ HOUSE?
Position Summary:
Counselors must be willing and able to relocate to our camp located in Ellwood City, PA for the duration of camp. Counselors that identify as male will work the first three weeks (6/12-7/7) while counselors that identify as female will work the second three weeks (7/10-8/4). As a counselor, you will be responsible for a tent of children (6-8 campers) within the same age range and will ensure their safety while in the tent and around camp. The counselor is responsible for any minor discipline issues that arise within their tent or with their campers. Counselors are also responsible for the overall safety and well-being of all campers. Activities will be pre-planned before the start of the first session and counselors will be part of that planning process. The main duty of the resident camp counselor is to ensure all kids stay safe (physically and emotionally) and have a memorable and fun experience at Sarah Heinz House Resident camp! Counselors will report to the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Sarah Heinz House Standard: To empower all youth, especially those who need us most, to laugh, learn and lead.
- Ensure safety of children at all times
- Strive to develop positive values and ethical behavior in members through teaching, discussion, and modeling.
- Lead age-appropriate activities, including arts and crafts, field games, high ropes, hiking, fishing and boating, STEAM, archery, ax handling and many others.
- Follow the daily camp schedule, ensuring smooth transitions between activities, meals, and rest periods.
- Adapt activities to meet the developmental needs and interests of campers.
- Provide constant supervision and ensure the safety of campers during all camp activities.
- Promote a positive and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation and cooperation.
- Support and assist with the implementation of programs.
- Attend and actively participate in all trainings and staff meetings.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with children and youth in a camp, childcare, or educational setting required.
- A strong affinity for the outdoors and outdoor related activities.
- High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework in education, child development, or related field is a plus.
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred, but not required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Enthusiasm for creating a positive and memorable camp experience for young children.
- Required Clearances: FBI Fingerprint, National Criminal Background Check, National Sex Offender Registry, PA Criminal Background Check & PATCH
