About Sarasota Opera
Sarasota Opera, which owns its 1926 historic theater, renovated in 2008, produces a winter festival season with
four operas in repertory from January to March, and a fall season of varying size. Throughout both seasons,
Sarasota Opera offers additional special events and concerts.
Position Summary
The Seasonal Technical Director is an independent contractor who, under the guidance of the Director of
Production, is responsible for the management of an IATSE crew of at least 16 as well as coordinating and
facilitating the various technical needs of a four show repertory opera season.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for scheduling and supervision of a full time seasonal IATSE crew.
- Function as part of the Production staff to plan, schedule and coordinate various departments and
production staff for opera season.
- Directly supervise all technical elements of production.
- Responsible for managing and implementing the daily production schedule.
- Maintain technical drawings for Sarasota Opera productions.
- Attend all departmental, design, and production meetings, as well as attend technical rehearsals and
performances.
- Arrange and supervise the load-In, change over, and strike of all scenic, prop and lighting elements.
- Supervise the on-site assembly and maintenance of scenery and the construction of props for all
operas. Facilitate these projects by purchasing materials and supplies as needed and supervising the
crew during the build process.
- Assist the Director of Production in the recruitment and hiring of necessary IATSE crew and seasonal staff.
- Oversee the maintenance of Production related equipment and systems as needed.
- Other duties as they may be assigned.
Position Requirements
- Successful candidates will demonstrate problem solving abilities with proven communication,
managerial, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail necessary to supervise all aspects of production.
- Experience leading union crews.
- Working knowledge of Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point, and AutoCAD.
- Experience as a TD for a regional opera or theater company, preferably working in a repertory
schedule.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
- Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to drive a 26’ box truck.
- Flexible schedule that will require working most nights and weekends during the season.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in print.
- Level-headed leader with the ability to stay calm during stressful situations.
- Promote a safe, efficient, and positive working environment.
- Must participate in and enforce the company’s COVID-19 protocols.
Dates and Pay
- Specific dates can be somewhat tailored to the applicant, but at least January 2, 2022 through March
31, 2022 are required.
- This is a seasonal independent contractor position; the rate is $1000 per week. Housing and travel are
provided.
- This position has the opportunity to advance into the fulltime TD position.
