“Head Nurse – Correctional Facility”
Saratoga County Corrections
Base Bargaining Unit Salary: $70,223 (max $83,641 based on years of service)

This is a supervisory position involving responsibility for providing professional nursing services to inmates at the
Saratoga County Correctional Facility. The work is carried out in accordance with the established policies and
procedures of the Correctional Facility and the accepted standards of nursing practice. The work is performed under
general supervision of the Medical Director with latitude for instructing, planning and making assignments of
subordinates. This position may have to work evenings and weekends. Does related work as required.

- Supervises the activities of professional subordinates in the care of patients and the administration of
- Instructs and assists nursing staff on nursing problems, medical room management and related activities;
- Orients new nursing personnel and oversees participation in related staff development and in-service
- Provides nursing care to patients within the Correction population;
- Observes patient's condition, assesses patient needs, and provides required nursing care;
- Administers prescribed medications, observes reports and records patient response to medication regimen;
- Performs skin tests for tuberculosis;
- Assists the attending physician during sick call;
- Maintains current clinical and nursing records and reports;
- May be required to provide emergency services or crises intervention in the absence of the staff physician;
- Recognizes physical and mental deviation from normal, makes arrangements for treatment and follow-up
- Assesses medical complaints and health emergencies, determines whether patient must be transported for
- May be called to administer nursing services after working hours;
- Triage inmates requesting medical services.

Minimum Qualifications are, at least…
Graduation from a school of nursing approved by the New York State Education Department as qualifying for
Registered Professional Nurse and one year of experience in professional nursing activities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility for a license issued by the New York State Education Department to
practice as a Registered Professional Nurse. Possession and currently registered at the time of appointment.
