Job Description

Position: Orchestra Teacher/Director
Reports To: Building Principal
Salary Schedule / Grade: Refer to DEA Salary Schedule
F.L.S.A Status: Exempt

SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning, employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students including strategies to meet diverse student needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan a balanced music program. Organize daily class activities so preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  • Instruct students in the proper care and use of equipment.
  • Establishes performance requirements, enforces academic requirements, and verifies each student’s eligibility to participate in orchestra.
  • Provides for orchestra participation at extracurricular events, including concerts and community events.
  • Organizes and conducts recruitment for the orchestra; informs administration and participants of final selections.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs musical experiences for the school and community with a minimum of three evening performances per school year.
  • Oversees scheduling and other arrangements for the rehearsals and concerts in cooperation with the building principal.
  • Prepares students and required documents for District and State OMEA Festivals.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of school-owned instruments. Controls the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  • Orders all supplies and materials necessary for orchestra-related activities in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations.
  • Implement the District’s classroom management strategies and programs.
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Valid Ohio Music teaching license
  • Experience working in urban education

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, stoop, and climb stairs
  • Occasionally lift and/or move lightweight items up to 40 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work is performed in a general school setting
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  • Work may be subject to frequent interruptions
  • Some assignments are subject to completion within strict timelines
  • Periodic travel for meetings, professional development activities, and work assignments
