GENERAL PURPOSE
Technical work performing specialized duties in the operation, use, and maintenance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the GIS Manager
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO CURRENT PAID SARPY COUNTY EMPLOYEES
Development of digital spatial data, including preparation, evaluation, interpretation, and conversion of infrastructure, zoning, plats, tax maps, and environmental data (soils, topographic, flood plain, slope, etc.)
Create data according to established procedures
Perform quality control to ensure data accuracy
Assist staff and public and supports the systems used to access county maps and information
Author and produce hard-copy maps and digital maps
Support the peripheral equipment used for field data collection and producing large-format documents
Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Maintain GIS knowledge current through attending classes and other training that becomes available
Participate in special projects as assigned
Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
Completion of an associate’s degree, or education and training equivalent to two years of college education, with an emphasis in geography, planning, computer science, GIS, land survey or related field.
Minimum one year experience in the use and procedures of GIS data development in the Esri environment. Professional or technical experience in geographic information systems work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the stated education.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of GIS principles and practices; demonstrated proficiency in ArcGIS applications; understanding of coordinate geometry (COGO). Skilled in map reproduction procedures and techniques; skilled in reading and interpretation of construction plans and as-builts, land/legal descriptions, and survey techniques; skilled in creating high quality maps applying cartographic principles.
Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical individuals. Work effectively with others as part of a team, build consensus, and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Concern for detail and accuracy. Creative problem-solving abilities and personal initiative, including the ability to carry out assignments with minimum supervision. Effective personal time-management and organizational skills to balance multiple competing priorities. Able to adapt to a dynamic environment and accommodate time pressures. Strong organizational skills.
Special Requirements
Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Drivers’ License, as well as meet eligibility requirements of “acceptable driver standards” as defined by the County.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Requires regular use of a telephone and personal computer; frequent use of, plotter, printer, GPS/GIS equipment, mobile devices, and software.
