POSITION SUMMARY:

The Maintenance Technician, under the direction of the Director of Language & Culture, is responsible for ensuring the Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial Building is maintained for safe utilization by the tribal community. The position is responsible for performing routine and daily janitorial duties, housekeeping, grounds keeping, repair and maintenance as needed for the Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial Building and nearby structures.                            

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  •  Maintains driveways, walkways, roofs, doorways, gates and handicap ramps in all weather conditions.  
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, using snowplows, snow blowers, and snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals.
  • Mow and trim lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and hand and power trimmers, and clear debris from grounds at Niigaanagiizhik Ceremonial Building and other sites as requested.
  • Perform cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and trash removal.         
  • Performing routine maintenance activities and notifying management of need for repairs
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Responsible for unloading, stacking, and monitoring wood for ceremonial use.     
  • Repairs and/or replaces plumbing fixtures and unclogging sewer/drain lines, electrical fixtures, household appliances, screen doors, entry and garage doors.
  • Performs routine, non-machine tasks; pick up papers, trimming bushes, rake leaves.
  • Scheduling and administering contracts for building usage with community members.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, and chairs to prepare facilities for events.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Assist with Language & Culture Department activities and special events.                                     
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:           

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers and outside vendor/service providers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position heaving with lifting of 100 pounds maximum with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.  Physical factors include constant standing, walking, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, use of near/midrange vision, bending; frequent use of far vision, depth perception, field of vision; occasional sitting, use of hearing, smell and color vision. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather; frequent exposure to extreme cold, wet/humidity; occasional extreme heat and noise. Potential hazards include constant exposure to moving mechanical parts, frequent exposure to equipment, and occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides, infectious exposure, client contact, needles/syringes and computer use.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of maintenance work, housekeeping or construction required.

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of mechanical and maintenance preferred. Basic knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations required. Basic knowledge of tools and equipment of the trade preferred. Must be able to prioritize and manage work load to meet goals in a timely manner. Knowledge of electrical and plumbing repairs preferred. General mechanical skills to perform basic building and equipment maintenance and repairs required. Must be able to work extended hours when needed and be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Knowledge of word processing software preferred. Knowledge of Anishinaabe life ways, culture, and traditions required.  Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors, and general public. Native American Preferred.
